Different Aga Installation Systems and Benefits of Flue

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

What are Flue systems?

A flue system included pipes, ducts, or chimney openings. Originally the word was used alternatively for chimneys. Pipes and ducts can be made from different materials depending on the type of flue. Chimneys are usually made from brick and mortar.

What is the purpose of a flue system?

The purpose of flue systems is to transport smoke, exhaust gasses, and harmful gasses from a fuel-burning source to the outdoors. These fuel-burning sources include generators, boilers, heaters, furnaces, fireplaces, stoves or anything that burns fuel in an enclosed area.

Is a flue line/system needed?

Although many modern stoves and fireplaces now come with their vent system, the answer to this question is not simple. A professional flue installation company should be consulted if you need clarification. Most of the stoves and fireplaces do require a flue system as they are located in enclosed spaces. Any system that consumes solid fuel(wood, coal), oil, or gas must be connected to an efficient flue system.

Do AGA appliances need a flue system?

AGA has been a leading brand providing heating appliances for over a century. These include cookers, fireplaces, stoves, and others. Some of these appliances require a flue system, while some latest ones don’t. There are primarily two types of AGA Flue Installation, including the conventional and powered flue.

What is an AGA conventional flue system?

All oil and solid fuel AGA required a conventional flue system. Conventional flue refers to a traditional masonry or brick-built chimney. A masonry chimney usually has stainless steel fuel liner that keeps the flue gases warm to reduce condensation. It also ensures smooth transport of the flue gasses to the outdoors and prevents the accumulation of harmful gasses within your home. For an AGA cooker, piping with a diameter of 4″/100mm is connected to the cooker while the other end is connected to a 5-inch flexible flue liner that transports the flue gasses from the cooker to the chimney and the outdoors.

What is an AGA Power Flue?

All gas-based AGA can have a powered or a conventional flue. The powered flue is only used with gas AGA. These systems employ electric fans to blow all the flue gasses out of your flue system. The fans have more power than the uplift of conventional chimneys, and therefore there is little chance of gas accumulation inside your home. The flue pipes have a smaller diameter than conventional systems and are installed horizontally instead of vertically, as in the case of conventional flue systems. The powered flue system allows you to install your AGA appliances on your internal walls. The electric fan can easily blow the flue gasses out through the horizontally attached pipes.

What are the benefits of installing a flue line?

Chimney Insulation

Flue gasses passing through chimneys come in contact with the chimney. Flue liners protect the chimney from corrosion, heat, and harmful gasses.

Flue liners should be installed in homes with wood burning or multi-fuel stove facilities as a matter of course. The flue liner will be a safe passageway for harmful gases passing through the chimney. If you have an AGE flue system installed at your home, then hiring professionals to carry out AGA Servicing annually will keep your chimney and insulation intact.

It reduces the risk of chimney fires.

Installation of a flue liner reduces the heat in the chimney, thus minimizing the risk of fire.

Prevention of masonry damage and condensation

Installing a flue liner in your chimney reduces the amount of condensation, which can damage the chimney structure.

Reduces the build-up of creosote, tar, and soot, tar.

Chimneys that burn wood accumulate a considerable amount of creosote, tar and soot. All three are combustible and increase the chances of chimney fires. However, installing flue liners reduces their build-up and prevents hazards.

Preventing Carbon Monoxide Leakage

Burning wood produces byproducts, including carbon monoxide, which is odourless, colourless, and highly toxic. It can cause serious health damage if released inside your home. Accumulation of CO inside your home can even lead to death. A flue liner ensures that all harmful gasses, including CO, are transferred from the chimney to the outdoors.

High energy efficiency

Installation of flue liners ensures ample airflow within the chimney, reducing the amount of fuel/wood required and thus enhancing energy efficiency.
