2024 SAG Nominations and What They Mean for the Oscar Race

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Awards season is now in full flow. With the Golden Globes already receding in the rearview mirror, another key milestone to look forward to is the SAG awards, coming to our screens on February 24 and live-streamed this year by new partner Netflix. There were few surprises among the nominations, but our entertainment attorney on the ground, Brandon Blake of Blake & Wang P.A. is here to unpack the state of the awards race as we hurtle towards the Oscars themselves.

The SAG Awards Enters its Third Decade

For the Screen Actors Guild Awards, this will be a landmark ceremony as it enters its 30th year. So perhaps it is fitting that two of the most-hyped (and enjoyed) movies of our time, Barbie and Oppenheimer, were both prominent in the nominations, netting four apiece. Likewise, TV breakout-hit, Succession, made a splash with its 5 nominations, closely followed by fan-favorite The Last of Us and comedic properties Ted Lasso and The Bear. The full nominations list was announced on January 10.

Key Nominations by Category

It will be news to no one that, alongside its nomination for Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture, Barbie earned Margot Robbie a nod for Female Actor in a Leading Role (Motion Picture) and Ryan Gosling for the male supporting category. It rounds out its nominations with one for stunt ensemble.

It faces some stiff competition in the Ensemble Cast category, going up against not only its major ‘frenemy’, Oppenheimer, but also the critically acclaimed Killers of the Flower Moon, the Color Purple, and American Fiction. This echoes a pattern we’ve seen throughout awards nominations so far and may be an indicator of what’s to come for the Oscars. While Best Picture nominations have widened significantly since the category was expanded to 10 films, it is still unusual to see a comedic picture carry this much awards sway. However, it is hard to deny Barbie the influence it has had on this year’s box office and the imaginations of its viewers.

Cillian Murphy also saw a Male Actor in a Leading Role nomination for Oppenheimer. Fresh off the back of his Golden Globes win, this may give him an edge, but there’s some stiff competition from Bradly Cooper (Maestro), Colman Domingo (Rustin), Jeffery Wright (American Fiction), and Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers), so the award is far from in the bag just yet.

Likewise, Margot Robbie will find herself up against a stunning performance from Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon), who seems likely to take home the award and who also won at the Golden Globes. We may also see that performance take home the Oscar crown. Although Emma Stone (Poor Things), Carey Mulligan (Maestro), and Annette Bening (Nyad) also delivered stellar performances.

Both of the supporting category Golden Globe winners are also nominated, Robert Downey Jnr for his role in Oppenheimer and Da’Vine Joy Randolph for The Holdovers, so it will be interesting to see if they can repeat the win.

There’s plenty to look forward to in what is set to be a fierce pre-Oscars campaign season, so it is well worth keeping your eye on what happens at the SAG Awards this year.
