North America

The U.S. cardboard market witnessed significant price volatility, shaped by evolving supply-demand dynamics. October saw a sharp price increase driven by heightened demand from downstream sectors, particularly e-commerce, food and beverage, and consumer goods packaging. This uptick was supported by a 14.5% rise in unbleached packaging paper shipments, according to the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA).

While expanded production capacity helped meet growing demand, supply chain constraints and inflationary pressures elevated production costs. In November, prices continued to climb as mills grappled with tight raw material inventories, further pushing up costs. Strong seasonal demand, especially tied to holiday packaging and e-commerce growth, sustained market momentum.

By December, however, market conditions shifted. Post-Thanksgiving, a slowdown in purchasing activity, reduced retail stockpiling, and normalization in e-commerce led to a drop in demand. Despite stable supply, manufacturers scaled back production to align with the softer market, easing price pressures as the quarter closed.

Asia-Pacific

China’s cardboard market experienced notable price swings due to shifting demand and supply conditions. October began with modest price increases following a prolonged period of stability. Anticipation of price hikes triggered demand-driven purchasing, as factories accelerated orders. Major paper mills initiated price hikes, prompting smaller players to follow, fueling a brief market rally.

Prices continued to rise into November, buoyed by seasonal demand from the packaging sector. Meanwhile, rising wastepaper prices in Zhejiang Province—driven by weak domestic consumption and limited recycling—further tightened supply. Mill maintenance shutdowns and reduced wastepaper availability amplified upward price pressure.

However, by December, the market reversed course. Demand weakened notably in the packaging and e-commerce sectors after the holiday period. Slower industrial activity and logistics dampened order volumes, while excess inventory and oversupply led to declining prices. Overall, the quarter reflected a familiar pattern: early gains driven by pre-holiday demand, followed by stabilization and eventual price corrections.

Europe

The cardboard market in Germany and across Europe faced pronounced price fluctuations. In October, prices rose despite subdued demand, largely due to rising input costs—namely energy, pulp, and labor. Ongoing supply chain disruptions and inflationary trends further strained production economics.

In November, prices continued to edge upward as mills passed on higher costs to customers. Although consumer spending remained tepid, holiday-driven demand in retail, packaging, and e-commerce helped buoy the market. A continued shift toward sustainable, recyclable materials also supported cardboard consumption.

By December, demand tapered off following the holiday peak, prompting a market correction. Retailers scaled back orders and e-commerce volumes normalized, leading to lower prices. Despite steady supply, reduced production and softer post-holiday activity led to declining price pressure. This trend underscored the seasonality of cardboard demand and the market’s sensitivity to broader economic and consumer behavior shifts.
