Although logistical bottlenecks—such as congestion at Hamburg port—persisted, they failed to offset the broader bearish sentiment. With inflationary pressures and sluggish industrial activity continuing into 2025, European caustic soda prices are expected to remain under downward pressure unless demand recovers.

Middle East & Africa (MEA)

Caustic soda prices in the Middle East, particularly Saudi Arabia, moved upward, driven by healthy demand and supply-side challenges. Strong consumption from key downstream sectors—alumina, aluminum, and textiles—was reinforced by rising industrial activity across Asia, one of the region’s main export markets. On the supply front, geopolitical instability and logistical inefficiencies in the Red Sea region—including port congestion and increased freight costs—put pressure on export flows. Despite this, Saudi ports displayed resilience, with container traffic up 23% in November, aided by improved operations at key hubs like Yanbu and Al Jubail. Higher caustic soda costs were also observed among alumina producers, due to limited global bauxite supply. Saudi Arabia’s expanding non-oil industrial base, strategic trade positioning, and production strength are expected to continue supporting demand. Amid inflationary headwinds and global uncertainties, the region’s caustic soda market is forecast to maintain its upward momentum into early 2025.

South America

South America’s caustic soda market, led by Brazil, saw rising prices in Q4 2024, fueled by constrained supply and steady industrial demand. A combination of lower output from key exporting countries and increased import costs from Asia contributed to a price surge in late October. U.S.-origin imports became more prominent, supported by tight supply and weather-related disruptions in the U.S. Brazil faced additional logistical hurdles, including customs strikes at ports like Santos in December, which heightened congestion and raised transportation costs. While domestic production helped maintain market stability, concerns over tariffs under President-elect Donald Trump and the potential for U.S. port strikes added further uncertainty. Demand remained strong across pulp and paper, alumina refining, and chemical sectors, even as seasonal slowdowns took effect. However, Alcoa’s force majeure at its Juruti bauxite mine disrupted alumina output at Alumar, adding volatility to caustic soda consumption. The launch of two new pulp and paper plants helped offset some of this impact. Despite inflationary pressures, the region’s robust industrial activity and resilient demand fundamentals supported the continued upward trajectory of caustic soda prices through the quarter.
