The automotive sector remained a bright spot, with strong vehicle sales both month-over-month and year-over-year boosting demand for chequered plate in applications such as vehicle flooring and loading ramps. Conversely, the construction sector faced seasonal slowdowns. Elevated mortgage rates dampened residential activity and buyer sentiment, while non-residential construction spending held steady, offering limited support to overall demand.

Despite economic headwinds and a cooling construction market, the U.S. chequered plate industry managed to maintain relative stability, thanks to consistent supply and robust demand from automotive applications.

Europe

In Q4 2024, European Chequered Plate prices fell 3% quarter-on-quarter, mirroring continued market weakness. Although raw material supply remained consistent, tepid demand from key end-use industries exerted downward pricing pressure. Oversupply issues and volatility in the nickel market further weighed on the region’s steel sector, eroding pricing leverage for suppliers. In Germany, the decline was largely driven by struggles in the construction and automotive sectors. Construction activity contracted sharply, with housing approvals and new orders falling significantly. While procurement and subcontractor costs eased slightly, overall sector sentiment remained pessimistic. The automotive industry saw a modest uptick in new vehicle registrations early in the quarter, but this was offset by a sharp drop in production and registrations by year-end. Weakened alloy surcharges and increased competition compounded supplier challenges, while rising production failed to resolve oversupply. Seasonal lulls and muted downstream demand added to the pressures, underscoring the broader industrial and economic hurdles facing Germany.

Asia-Pacific (APAC)

Chequered Plate prices in the APAC region fell by 5% quarter-on-quarter in Q4 2024, as the market contended with sluggish demand and shifting supply dynamics. While stainless steel production saw modest growth supported by stable raw material availability, buying activity across major sectors remained limited, intensifying downward price pressure.

In China, the market encountered significant headwinds. Manufacturing activity improved steadily, as reflected in the NBS Manufacturing PMI, yet demand for chequered plates remained subdued. Downstream industries curtailed procurement to essential volumes amid surplus inventories and a seasonal slowdown in construction. Northern regions faced additional challenges from colder weather, which hampered construction progress. Meanwhile, real estate investment and sales continued to decline, deepening market pessimism. Although passenger vehicle sales rose 12% year-on-year, the growth did not meaningfully boost chequered plate consumption due to mismatches between automotive production and material requirements. A decline in raw material costs, particularly Nickel Pig Iron and ferrochrome, added to the downward pricing trajectory. By quarter-end, SS Chequered Plate (304-6 mm, FOB Tianjin) was priced at USD 1,879/MT, reflecting subdued market sentiment and cautious purchasing behavior.
