In Q4 2024, the U.S. rapeseed oil market experienced significant volatility due to shifting supply-demand dynamics and macroeconomic factors. October witnessed a sharp price surge, driven by reduced rapeseed production caused by adverse weather, robust global demand, and increasing freight and refining costs.

A weaker U.S. dollar and heightened export demand from Europe and Asia further strained domestic supply. Meanwhile, the U.S. Manufacturing PMI rose to 48.5, signaling a slowdown in contraction despite supply chain disruptions from hurricanes and uncertainties surrounding the U.S. Presidential Election. However, in November, prices eased significantly as increased imports from Canada and Australia alleviated supply pressures. High domestic inventories and weaker biofuel demand, influenced by fluctuating crude oil prices, further weighed on the market. Still, improved coastal pickup volumes provided some support.

By December, prices declined further due to a larger-than-expected global rapeseed harvest, shifting consumer preferences toward alternative oils, and weakening demand from the biofuel sector. A stronger U.S. dollar and lower logistics costs facilitated competitive imports, while an economic slowdown dampened consumption. As a result, by the end of December 2024, prices settled at USD 1212/MT CFR Chicago.

India’s rapeseed oil market experienced notable fluctuations throughout Q4 2024, influenced by seasonal trends, domestic demand, and global market conditions. In October, prices surged due to increased festive consumption, strategic stockpiling by oil mills, and a supply crunch driven by heightened domestic oilseed demand. Farmers withheld stocks in anticipation of higher prices, supported by favorable monsoon conditions that bolstered crop forecasts. This upward trend continued through mid-November.

Rising export demand, particularly from Southeast Asia, and the depreciation of the Indian Rupee further supported prices, despite competition from U.S. and European markets. India’s manufacturing sector remained strong, with the PMI rising to 57.5, driven by robust domestic and international demand despite inflationary pressures. However, by December, rapeseed oil prices saw a significant decline, attributed to improved seasonal crop yields, reduced post-festive demand, and falling international prices following strong harvests in Canada and Australia. Oversupply conditions, as traders adjusted stock levels, further contributed to the decline, leading prices to settle at USD 1568.12/MT Ex Jaipur.

In Q4 2024, the European rapeseed oil market, particularly in Germany, experienced notable price fluctuations due to a combination of supply constraints and rising demand. In October, export prices surged sharply, driven by a significant decline in EU rapeseed production for the 2024-2025 period, exacerbated by adverse weather that led to a global shortfall of approximately 1.3 million tons. Trade restrictions with Russia and Belarus, along with reduced Ukrainian exports, further constrained supply, pushing prices higher.

Demand for rapeseed oil remained strong as alternative vegetable oils, such as palm and sunflower oil, faced supply challenges. In November, prices continued to rise in Germany, fueled by lower domestic production, tight supply chains, and robust demand from the food and biodiesel sectors. Reduced sunflower seed yields further increased rapeseed oil’s importance in the market. Additionally, strong international demand, particularly from neighboring countries, contributed to price hikes.

By December, however, the German rapeseed oil market experienced a slight price correction, following a period of sustained increases. This decline was primarily driven by market consolidation, weakened demand from European end-users, and the euro’s depreciation against the U.S. dollar. Increased competition from Canadian canola and softer global vegetable oil prices also contributed to this stabilization, reflecting the market’s resilience amid ongoing geopolitical and economic uncertainties.
