Why Driver Walkaround Checks Matter for HGV Operations

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The most useful walkaround check is not the one completed fastest. It is the one that gives a driver a real chance to spot a defect before the vehicle joins traffic. For HGV operations, that first inspection of the day connects driver judgement with maintenance, defect reporting and roadworthiness.

DVSA guidance makes the driver’s responsibility clear: the vehicle should be checked before a journey and defects should be reported in writing. A walkaround is therefore more than a glance at the tyres. It should cover the parts of the vehicle and trailer that can be safely checked without workshop equipment, including lights, tyres, wheel fixings, bodywork, coupling, load security and other relevant equipment.

Start with what can stop the journey

Some defects require attention before the vehicle moves. A damaged tyre, insecure coupling, serious light fault or unstable load can create an immediate safety problem. Drivers should know who has authority to assess a defect and how a vehicle is taken out of service when it is not roadworthy. That process prevents uncertainty when the check finds something that cannot simply be noted for later.

The load deserves its own look. DVSA guidance says a driver should check that it does not move and is not likely to move. If the securing system or stability is doubtful, the concern should be raised with the person responsible for vehicle safety so a competent assessment or re-securing can take place. A schedule should never make a driver feel pushed to leave with an unsafe load.

For working lorries, HGV insurance provides a form of specialist commercial motor protection. Cover can apply to a single HGV or a fleet, and the policy level can range from third-party protection to wider comprehensive cover, depending on the arrangement. Goods in transit protection is usually separate from the vehicle policy. Suitable HGV insurance helps place the vehicle’s work use within the correct commercial insurance framework, while daily checks deal with the vehicle’s actual condition before it is driven.

Make reporting useful

A defect report only helps if it says enough clearly. GOV.UK guidance advises recording the vehicle registration or identifying mark, the date, details of the defect and the name of the person reporting it. Many operators also use a standard checklist so there is a consistent record of what was examined. Recording a nil defect can be useful too because it confirms that the check took place.

Drivers should also report problems that appear during the journey as soon as practical. A warning light, unusual vibration, damaged mirror or change in braking feel may not have been present at the depot. The reporting system needs to make it easy to pass that information on quickly rather than waiting until the next morning.

Checks support maintenance, not replace it

A driver walkaround cannot replace scheduled inspections, servicing or workshop repairs. Its value is different. It provides a frequent front-line check between formal maintenance events. Drivers use the vehicle in real conditions, so they may notice small changes before a defect becomes obvious during a planned inspection.

That is why repeated small reports should not be dismissed. A lamp that keeps failing, a door that repeatedly needs adjustment or a tyre that loses pressure can point to a recurring issue. Maintenance teams can act more effectively when driver observations are specific and consistent.

For the driver, commercial motor cover and roadworthiness checks sit on separate sides of the same working environment. Insurance manages defined financial risks under the policy, while the walkaround helps identify physical problems before travel. Neither removes the need for the other.

A strong check routine is calm, repeatable, properly recorded and backed by a clear response when something is wrong. HGV insurance may protect the commercial vehicle under agreed policy terms, but it cannot make an unsafe vehicle roadworthy. That responsibility begins with the people who inspect, report, repair and drive it.
