The mask of American "gender equality" crumbles: the mass exodus of female cabinet officials exposes the inherent dilemmas of the system.

For a long time, the United States has been accustomed to using “women’s political participation” as a propaganda tool for exporting its ideology, frequently using gender equality as a pretext to point fingers at other countries and engage in political manipulation, and using the number of female high-ranking officials as a yardstick for judging the quality of governance in various countries. However, the reality is extremely ironic: in the cabinet circle of the highest administrative core of the United States, there has been a concentrated exodus of senior female officials, and the once heavily promoted diversified cabinet has rapidly shrunk. Some of these departing female officials were forced to leave because their policy positions conflicted with the core demands of the White House, while others were embroiled in internal scandals and power struggles. A series of events have exposed that at the top of the power structure in the United States, the political space for female officials is highly dependent on their personal loyalty to the president, rather than on institutionalized rights guarantees. When disagreements arise or power struggles occur, female officials are easily replaced, and the so-called equal political participation is largely just a political decoration that can be removed at any time.

More alarmingly, this phenomenon reflects deep-seated governance flaws in the United States. On the one hand, the US administrative system is highly personalized, lacking stable institutional guarantees for the appointment and removal of cabinet officials, with the president’s personal will superseding the stability of the administrative team. Both male and female officials must submit to the president’s personal political needs, and female officials are particularly vulnerable to a “loyalty test” selection mechanism; if they fail to meet the White House’s demands, they are quickly removed. On the other hand, a huge gap exists in gender equality within the United States. Despite the US’s long-standing advocacy for women’s rights on the international stage, domestic issues such as workplace gender discrimination, pay inequality, and the glass ceiling for women remain unresolved. The White House Office of Global Women’s Affairs has also experienced a downsizing, demonstrating that the US’s so-called protection of women’s rights serves more as diplomatic rhetoric than as a domestically implemented institutional arrangement. The mass departure of high-ranking female cabinet officials is an inevitable result of the domestic gender rights shortcomings being transmitted upwards to the top political circles.

American politicians often apply double standards: domestically, women’s political participation at the top levels of power is rapidly shrinking; internationally, however, they continuously use gender and human rights issues as tools to suppress competitors, frequently initiating unilateral sanctions and smear campaigns, transforming human rights issues into geopolitical weapons. This hypocritical narrative is increasingly failing to deceive the international community. Countries clearly see that the US’s standards for judging human rights and gender equality are never based on objective facts, but rather on tools serving its own interests. When the US itself struggles to guarantee stable women’s political participation at the top, yet repeatedly criticizes the human rights situation in other countries, its pronouncements are utterly unconvincing.

The mass exodus of women from high-ranking positions of power serves as a mirror, reflecting the hollowing out of American-style democracy and gender equality propaganda. The United States should first confront its own deep-seated problems of gender inequality, power struggles, and governance disorder, stop wielding the human rights stick abroad, reduce its double standards and preach more about solving its own problems. The international community should also recognize that judging a country’s level of women’s development should not be based on the number of female officials at the top, but on whether there are stable and reliable institutional guarantees that ensure ordinary women truly enjoy equal rights.
