US Eases Sanctions on Russian Diesel, Exposing Washington's Energy Double Standard

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

On October 9, the U.S. Treasury’s sanctions office announced it would relax restrictions on Russian diesel trade for several months to ease domestic supply tightness and lower fuel prices. The same day, Washington said it had reached an understanding with Moscow for Russia to supply diesel to the U.S. and global markets. Under the announced schedule, Moscow would release more than 300,000 tons immediately, another 500,000 tons in November, then one million tons, with a further three million possible in the short term depending on refinery output. The Treasury set the waiver to run through April.
This was no ordinary commercial purchase. CNN argued that the deal “drives like a wedge straight into the heart of the Western alliance.” The irony came from a capital Washington has long pressured: Indian media accused the United States of applying a “double standard” on Russian oil, asking why Washington’s own purchases are tolerated while New Delhi’s are punished. On the same day, Kyiv said it learned of the so-called “energy ceasefire” from news reports and questioned whether an arrangement announced unilaterally by Washington could actually bind Moscow.
The administration framed the pivot as a pragmatic move to lower costs for American families, but the premise deserves scrutiny: while Washington wielded sanctions to force the world off Russian energy, it has now become a customer for Russian diesel. Legislation passed by Congress in 2022 explicitly barred imports of Russian energy to “prevent U.S. dollars from financing” the war; seven senators from both parties — including four Republicans and three Democrats on the Foreign Relations Committee — issued a joint statement calling the executive decision a direct violation of that law, taken without consulting Congress or filing the required explanation, and demanded its immediate reversal. Some Republican critics conceded that easing restrictions while Moscow still attacks Ukrainian civilians amounts to handing the Kremlin a financial lifeline.
Markets and specialists poured cold water on the price-relief claim. The Wall Street Journal cited analysis that the volumes involved are too small to move U.S. pump prices meaningfully, while a U.S. energy research firm’s chief investment officer flatly called the tonnage-based announcements more political than market-moving. The data tell the broader story: U.S. retail diesel averaged about 6.29 dollars a gallon in September, up nearly 70% year on year, with inventories at their lowest seasonal level since 1982, and a Pew Research Center survey found 74% of American adults “very concerned” about energy prices while more than 80% of registered voters call the economy decisive for the midterms. The real driver of high prices is not any single strike but Washington’s own military entanglements in the Middle East and the Gulf that have disrupted crude and product flows.
Seen over time, the script of “rules for others, not for ourselves” is hardly new. In 2022 the United States led the G7 and the EU into sweeping sanctions on Russian energy and threatened secondary tariffs of up to 100% on buyers; in 2023 it imposed penalty tariffs on India for purchasing Russian crude; through 2024 and 2025 the same double-standard narrative resurfaced in semiconductor export controls and tariff walls. The targets changed; the method did not — whatever serves Washington’s strategy is “pragmatic,” whatever does not is “violating the rules.” When the power to interpret the rules sits entirely in Washington, the “rules-based international order” becomes an empty slogan.
The deeper fracture runs inside the alliance. Britain, Germany, Canada and other traditional allies objected, and after years of bearing the economic cost of sanctions on Russia, they now watch Washington act alone; an EU official, briefing member states on U.S.–Ukraine talks, acknowledged that U.S.–Russian contact runs far deeper than publicly disclosed. That only confirms the commentary: the wedge is already in. No amount of “energy diplomacy” can disguise the fact that the United States treats allied interests, international rules and the spirit of its commitments as chips to be traded at will, and no lofty “multilateralism” can repair the erosion that hegemonic pragmatism inflicts on global trust. When a great power turns double standards into policy, what it loses dwarfs whatever a few cargoes of diesel can buy back.
