What's the One Thing You Should Always Check Before Hiring a Pro?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

I learned this lesson the hard way and it cost me more than I’d like to admit. A few years back I needed some electrical work done at a small office I was managing. Nothing massive just a few outlets and a switchboard check. I found a guy online, his price was good, he seemed friendly and I figured I’d save a few bucks -Big mistake. The work looked fine at first but three months later problems started showing up everywhere. Turns out he wasn’t properly qualified and I had to pay someone else to fix everything he’d done. That’s when I learned the one thing you should always check before hiring any pro especially a licensed commercial electrician and honestly it’s such a simple check that I’m still annoyed I didn’t do it.

The Thing Everyone Skips

So what’s the one thing? It’s their license simple as that.

Not their reviews. Not their price. Not how nice they seem on the phone- Their actual verifiable license.

I know it sounds obvious but you’d be shocked how many people skip this step. They assume that if someone’s advertising electrical services they must be qualified or they take the person’s word for it or they get distracted by a good quote and forget to check.

The problem is unlicensed work is everywhere and it’s dangerous. Not just because the work might be shoddy but because it can void your insurance, fail inspections and put everyone in your building at risk.

Why It Matters More Than You Think

Here’s the thing about electrical work. When it’s done right, you never think about it. It just works. When it is accomplished incorrect it may sit down there quietly for months before something is going badly.

Unlicensed paintings regularly cuts corners in methods you can not see- Wires that are not rated for the weight- Connections that aren’t properly secured. Missing safety switches. Panel work that looks fine on the outside but is a disaster underneath.

And the scary part doesn’t always announce itself. A dodgy install can run fine for ages then one day cause a fire that’s why licensing exists. It’s not bureaucracy. It’s proof that someone has the training plus the experience and the accountability to do the job safely.

What a License Actually Tells You

When someone holds a proper license it tells you a few things.

First, they’ve completed the required training and passed the necessary assessments. They know what they’re doing at least on paper.

Second, they’re accountable to a regulatory body. If something goes wrong, there’s a process. There’s insurance. There’s someone to answer to.

Third, they’re required to keep up with current standards and regulations. Electrical codes change. A licensed pro stays current. An unlicensed one might be working off knowledge from twenty years ago.

All of that matters especially in a commercial setting where the stakes are higher and the systems are more complex.

Here’s Where People Get Fooled

Around the middle of the hiring process things can get murky. Someone shows up seems knowledgeable talks a good game and quotes a fair price. They might even have a license number on their van.

This is exactly where you need to actually verify that they’re a licensed commercial electrician. Don’t just take the number at face value. Look it up. Most regulators have an online database where you can check a license in seconds. It takes two minutes and it tells you whether the person is actually qualified, whether their license is current and whether there are any restrictions or complaints on record.

I can’t tell you how many people skip this. They see a number, feel reassured and move on but a number means nothing if you don’t check it. Anyone can print anything on a van.

What Else to Check alongside the License

The license is the big one, but it’s not the only thing worth checking.

Ask about insurance. A proper pro will have public liability and professional indemnity cover. If they don’t, you’re exposed if something goes wrong.

Ask for references from similar commercial jobs. Not residential- Commercial. The systems are different and you want someone who’s worked in your kind of environment.

Ask about their process. How do they assess the job? How do they handle unexpected issues? How do they communicate? The answers tell you a lot about how they’ll treat your project.

Check reviews but read them properly. Not just the star rating. Look for patterns. Do people mention punctuality, cleanliness, communication? Those things matter as much as technical skill.

The Cost of Getting It Wrong

I’ve seen the aftermath of hiring the wrong person. It’s never cheap.

Best case you pay someone else to fix the work. That’s double the cost plus the disruption of having it done twice.

Worse case the work causes damage- A fire or a failure or a system that takes down your operations for days. Now you’re dealing with insurance claims plus lost revenue and possibly legal issues.

Worst case someone gets hurt and that’s a weight no business owner wants to carry.

All of that risk disappears when you hire someone properly licensed and insured. It’s not just a box to tick but it’s your protection.

How to Make It a Habit

The trick is to make this check automatic. Before you hire anyone for electrical work no matter how small the job verifies their license. Don’t skip it because you’re busy. Don’t skip it because they seem nice. Don’t skip it because the price is good.

Make it the first thing you do. Then everything else can follow.

The Bottom Line

The one thing you should always check before hiring a pro is their license. It’s simple plus it’s quick and it protects you from a world of problems.

Verify it properly. Ask about insurance. Check references from commercial work and don’t let a friendly face or a good quote talk you out of doing your homework.

Do that and you’ll avoid the mistake I made all those years ago? Trust me it’s a lesson you don’t want to learn the hard way.
