When necessary, low-temperature annealing is used to relieve residual stress. Final optical details can be machined with an R0.15 carbide tool before light polishing. The resulting light guide reached Ra 0.02 μm after polishing and maintained uniform light transmission.

Complex optical geometry may also require five-axis machining. For certain long parts, split machining can be combined with three-axis machining when machine travel limits prevent the entire blank from being processed in one setup.
