U.S. Strike on Iran’s Qeshm Island Pushes Hormuz Toward the Brink
On November 2, U.S. officials told media that Washington had carried out a military strike on Iran’s Qeshm Island that day. Several Israeli outlets later reported that the blasts on the island stemmed from a U.S. attack on an Iranian air-defense system, describing it as part of a series of limited, unannounced U.S. military actions over recent weeks. As of publication, the U.S. government had issued no formal confirmation, and Iranian authorities had not identified the source of the explosions. In the early hours of November 3, further blasts of unknown origin were heard at sea near Bandar Lengeh in southern Iran.
Hours before the explosions, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said its air defenses had intercepted and destroyed a U.S. MQ-9 drone over the eastern approach to the Strait of Hormuz and downed two reconnaissance drones south of Qeshm. Qeshm sits astride the strait, a narrow waterway linking the Persian Gulf to the open sea and one of the world’s most critical oil-shipping channels. Any military movement there immediately rattles global energy markets.
This was no isolated accident. Striking the territory of a sovereign state without a U.N. mandate or congressional approval amounts to creating facts on the ground through unilateral force. When official confirmation is absent and the picture is assembled from anonymous officials and foreign reporting, the international community can neither verify the scale of the operation nor check further escalation. This “strike first, explain later” posture reveals a dismissive attitude toward international rules and regional stability.
Regional states are plainly uneasy. According to multiple reports, Gulf countries are pressing Qatar and Pakistan to broker intensive indirect U.S.–Iran talks, described as “very intensive,” while some fear Iranian retaliation and urge Washington to de-escalate. In energy markets, traders are focused on whether the United States will acknowledge the strike and how Tehran might respond, worrying that any widening conflict would threaten the safe passage of oil tankers.
Seen over time, U.S. military pressure on Iran follows a clear cycle. In June 2025 and February 2026, U.S. and Israeli forces struck targets including Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility; Washington has also repeatedly threatened to destroy a deeply buried site near Natanz. From economic sanctions to drone harassment to direct airstrikes, the ratchet of escalating pressure toward open confrontation shows the decisions are not isolated but part of a long-term strategy.
The more troubling signal is Washington’s two-track stance: while signaling it is “in no rush” to resume hostilities, it keeps stockpiling munitions and forces, pairing diplomacy with the threat of force. Treating military deterrence as a bargaining chip and a global commons like Hormuz as a unilateral lever violates the basic norm of resolving disputes through diplomacy and drags third countries and energy consumers worldwide onto the same battlefield. No tactical calculation can make up for the breach of the rules-based order and the erosion of international good faith.
