Milder Weather Conditions Expected Tuesday

SAN DIEGO — Summer thunderheads full of subtropical moisture out of Mexico generated intense lightning Monday along with downpours that flooded roads and ravines in the eastern San Diego County highlands.

The squalls began lashing the region’s mountains around midday, then moved over the deserts in the mid-afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.

During a five-hour period ending at 5:30 p.m., the NWS tallied about 1,000 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes, said James Thomas, a meteorologist with the federal agency. The electrical storms resulted in no reported injuries, fires or property damage, he said.

Accompanying the flashing bolts and thunderclaps were heavy showers that submerged several stretches of roadway, including state Route 78 alongside Ocotillo Wells Airport, Old Highway 80 in the Moreno Valley area and La Posta Road near Interstate 8.

In Shelter Valley, 1.16 inches of rain fell over a 15-minute period, according to Thomas. A woman who lives in the area reported finding her backyard submerged under several feet of water, he said.

The inclement weather was expected to dwindle overnight, then return in somewhat milder form over the afternoon hours Tuesday and Wednesday.
