China’s Great Battle of Good Vs. Evil: Can the United States Help?

The “great battle of good vs. evil” I’m referring to is the persecution of Falun Gong by the Chinese Communist Party.

For 14 years now, the intolerant Party has subjected those who practice the peaceful meditation discipline to imprisonment, heavy labor, and various forms of torture.  They’ve even gone so far as to kill thousands of imprisoned Falun Gong practitioners and sell their organs for transplants, a terrible human rights violation which is the subject of U.S. House Resolution 281.

The resolution was introduced on July 25 by Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen and Rep. Robert Andrews.  It calls for the U.S. government to demand that the Party stop the persecution and the practice of organ harvesting from prisoners of conscience in China.

The resolution states that around 65,000 Falun Gong practitioners may have died from organ harvesting between 2000 and 2008, according to an estimate by researcher Ethan Gutmann.  The Party also persecutes people from other religious or ethnic minority groups, and Gutmann adds that many of them may have been subjected to organ harvesting, too.

Another aim of the resolution is to make sure that anyone from the United States who goes to get an organ transplant from China is warned that their organs may come from prisoners of conscience.

“The People’s Republic of China performs more than 10,000 organ transplantations per year, yet as of May 2013 it did not have an organized or effective public system of organ donation or distribution,” the resolution states.

“Chinese hospitals have advertised wait times of 2 to 4 weeks for kidney and liver transplants,” the resolution adds. “Such short wait times are best explained by the existence of a large pool of living donors whose organs can be harvested on demand.”

Falun Gong emphasizes truthfulness, compassion and tolerance.  Although it’s an ancient Chinese practice, plenty of people in the United States practice it, too.  They’re currently working to support House Resolution 281 and collect signatures in the hopes that their imprisoned fellows in China will soon be released.

After the Foreign Affairs Committee votes on the resolution, if it is passed, the House will vote on it.

In 2010 they passed H. Res. 605, which also called for an end to the persecution.  However, H. Res. 281 goes into much more detail about organ harvesting, as the Epoch Times points out.

Can the U.S. government help stop the persecution and rescue thousands of innocent people?  Only time will tell, but at least they seem to be making an effort.
