The Toad That Ruled China

When Chinese netizens write posts about former Chinese Communist Party head Jiang Zemin, they refer to him as the “toad.”

This is due to his toadlike appearance and the fact that China’s Internet is censored, so netizens have to use nicknames and codes to talk about politically sensitive topics, Epoch Times reported.

Jiang launched the mass persecution of the Falun Gong spiritual practice in 1999, ordering the imprisonment and torture of countless innocent Chinese citizens. Needless to say, this did not make him very popular in China or elsewhere.

Things are going downhill for him now. His political rival, current Party head Xi Jinping, has been investigating and sacking Jiang’s allies one after another, and Jiang may be next, according to Epoch Times.

Toad references have been popping up in Chinese media to poke fun at the former dictator. There is even a story describing how Jiang was reincarnated from an actual toad.

As told in the Epoch Times, the legend is that Jiang’s wicked soul was created when “a waft of envy and hatred” from the lowest part of hell came to Earth and entered a toad’s body. The resulting evil amphibian later died and reincarnated as Jiang.

The toad story might sound funny, but what isn’t funny is the reality of what happens when such a person is given complete control over the world’s most populous country.

Jealous of Falun Gong’s enormous popularity, and hoping to increase his own power, Jiang ordered a persecution that tore apart lives and families and resulted in thousands of deaths. The persecution has continued for fifteen years, the cruelest act of violence in the Party’s history.

The moral of the story? Evil amphibians should never, under any circumstances, be put in charge of a nation.
