Grenade kills two, injures 30 at Kenyan revival
Kenya (MNN) ― An eight-year-old boy was recently pronounced dead from injuries incurred by a grenade in Kenya.
The boy was one of 30 who were injured last weekend when a grenade hit a Christian revival meeting. A woman was killed as well.
Compass Direct News reports that eyewitnesses of the attack have said someone inside a moving vehicle threw a hand grenade toward a podium where Rev. Daniel Mwendwa of the Miracle in the Village Church was ministering. Though police and ambulances came quickly, the group of singers leading worship suffered much of the blow.
The grenade was thrown into a Christian revival meeting led by the Mtwapa Pastors’ Fellowship. There were 500 Christians from 16 denominations at the event, who were planning initially to meet until Sunday.
Many suspect Somalia’s al Shabaab to be the culprits of the attack, although the group has not claimed responsibility, says Compass Direct. The Kenyan government has issued a warning of possible attacks by al Shabaab this coming Easter weekend.
Whoever is responsible for the attack, it appears to have been directly targeting believers. Sources say that a Muslim gathering had been taking place for days just down the road but experienced no unrest whatsoever. In fact, the group carried on with their meeting even after the grenade attack.
According to the Joshua Project, Kenya is 48.9% evangelical. But neighbor Somalia has virtually no Christian presence. Al Shabaab has frequently been behind similar anti-Christian attacks, even in Kenya.
Pray that this attack would not distract the believers from their faith. Pray, in fact, that this would only open more doors for the Gospel.
