US ramps up airstrikes on IS targets around Kobani
Reports say that the security zone in the Syrian city of Kobani has fallen to Islamic State militants.
At least 500 civilians remain trapped inside the predominantly Kurdish town on the Turkish border, with the UN envoy to Syria warning of an imminent massacre.
Meanwhile the US-led coalition has ramped up airstrikes in the region.

Malala awarded Nobel Peace Prize
Pakistani child education campaigner Malala Yousafzai has won the Nobel Peace prize, making her the youngest recipient of the award at just 17.
The prize was shared with Indian child rights activist Kailash Satyarthi.

Some Missouri leaders are calling for a federal investigation after a white police officer fatally shot a black teen.
Many residents are preparing for a weekend of protests over alleged police violence and racial profiling.

Rival gun measures on ballot in Washington state
Two competing measures on the Washington state ballot this fall ask voters to take a stance on expanded background checks for gun sales. One is seeking universal checks for all sales and transfers, including private transactions. The other would prevent any such expansion.
Supporters of the initiative to expand background checks have received large donations from wealthy figures, including Microsoft co-founders Bill Gates and Paul Allen, and have spent millions, far outpacing the anti-expansion effort.
KIM ABSENCE AT MAJOR EVENT RAISES HEALTH QUESTIONS
For the first time in three years, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un didn’t appear at a celebration of the anniversary of the founding of the ruling Workers’ Party, increasing speculation that something is Wrong. Kim hasn’t been seen publicly in more than a month.
North Korea’s propaganda machine said that the might of the party “is growing stronger under the seasoned guidance of Marshal Kim Jong Un.
Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev in hospital
Former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev has been taken to hospital after an ‘aggravation’ of an unspecified illness.
However he sounded in an upbeat mood, report Russian media, and said he would fight for his recovery.
The last Soviet leader, Gorbachev started reforms of the Communist system but ultimately could not prevent its collapse.
