Kurds gain ground but not control in struggle for Syrian border town

Under heavy fire, Syrian Kurds backed by fighters from northern Iraq have gained ground, but have yet to win back control the Syrian border town of Kobani.

Iraqi Kurdish Armored vehicles and artillery started, more than a week ago to try to repulse the month-old siege – testing the U.S.-led coalition’s ability to halt the Islamist insurgents.

Arctic blast descends on Rockies, Upper Midwest

Arctic air associated with the polar vortex will lunge into the North Central United States early next week and will expand southward and eastward to affect about 200 million people as the week progresses.

The coldest weather of the season so far will extend from the Dakotas to Texas and the Interstate-95 corridor by the end of the week. The outbreak of arctic air will be long-lasting and may linger well past the middle of the month.

In Pittsburgh alone there will be a 30 degree drop in the next few days.

Obama Supports Consumers In Net Neutrality Debate

President Obama has come down on the side of consumers over the controversial issue of who controls internet traffic. The net neutrality debate arouses strong feelings from the business community to consumer advocates.

Slow moving lava from Hawaii volcano hits first house

Lava flow from the Kilauea volcano on Hawaii’s Big Island has destroyed its first house in the eastern village of Pahoa.

It took about 45 minutes for the 1,100-square-foot home to burn down.

A lava stream has been slowly creeping towards the village for months, giving residents plenty of time to evacuate.

Volcano Eruption Forces Icelanders to Hide

The Bardarbunga volcano is still at it in Iceland. The eruption has been going for almost three months and shows no sign of stopping. Red-hot lava has spread 27 square miles, covering an area larger than Manhattan.

Since Nov. 7, about 200 earthquakes have rocked the area surrounding the eruption site, yesterday’s 5.2 measured. Iceland’s Civil Protection Agency today warned that gas pollution was expected mainly in the western part of the country.
