American Pastor Languishes for 1,000 Days in Iranian Prison

1,000 days ago, Pastor Saeed, an American citizen, was sentenced to eight years in an Iranian prison for his involvement in planting Christian house churches. Over the past three years Saeed has endured violent behavior in an attempt by Iran to hide their wrongful treatment of the pastor while the Obama Administration has failed to obtain Saeed’s release.

At one point, Pastor Saeed was transferred to Rajai Shahr prison, the most brutal prison in Iran with the most violent criminals. Inmate-on-inmate violence is excessive there and Pastor Saeed dealt with multiple threats upon his life. Not only that, but prison officials also refused to give him medical treatment or his medication.

Originally Pastor Saeed was placed in the murderer ward of Rajai Shahr prison, even though he has never been charged with murder. This was a clear indicator that Iranian officials wanted him dead. Thankfully he was recently transferred to the political prisoners ward. So, even though he remains imprisoned for his faith, the constant threats upon his life from other inmates will hopefully lessen.

During a visit to Iran by Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the European Union and an advocate for the pastor’s release, Pastor Saeed was transferred to an Iranian hospital to receive treatment for internal bleeding after he was repeatedly beaten. Once Ashton left Iran, Saeed was sent back to prison without receiving the urgent treatment. Reports surfaced that he lost significant weight and was covered in lice from head to toe.

Pastor Saeed, and American citizen, has been languishing in an Iranian prison for 1,000 days. Pastor Saeed has been stolen from his wife and young children, tortured, threatened with death unless he converts to Islam, but remains faithful to Christ in the midst of such horrible persecution.
