Despite the damning videos exposing Planned Parenthood’s illegal activity selling unborn baby parts, many pro-abortion advocates are still fighting tooth and nail for the continued funding the corrupt organization. Sometimes it can seem difficult to carefully and biblically respond to the pro-abortion arguments. What about abortion in the case of rape? What about the health of the woman?

The truth is, abortion in America is legal throughout all nine months of pregnancy and is the number-one killer in the United States. Nearly 1.2 million American women have an abortion to end a pregnancy. Of these, 98% are elective and less than 2% of abortions are for rape and incest or the life or health of the mother.

The Health of the Mother!!!!

Is it ever ethical for a woman to have an abortion when her life is at stake? Jesus says, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” (John 15:13) So does that mean it’s never ok?

Less than 2% of pregnancies cause severe harm to mother. Sadly there are instances of ectopic pregnancies, where the zygote does not get properly implanted in the uterus. If an ectopic pregnancy goes to full term, the mother would die. Based upon a Biblical ethic a mother can protect her life. Of course this decision is certainly heart breaking, but she does not have to die. With ectopic pregnancies, not only would the mother die but the baby too.

But, as it is often said, exceptions make very bad law. Making general laws based on exceptions is wrong.

According to Dr Janet Crouse, the data does not support the conclusion that legalizing abortion is responsible for reduced maternal mortality. For example, Ireland, with one of the lowest maternal mortality rates in the world, has not legalized abortion. The United States, which “legalized” abortion in 1973 and has high general health standards, has a maternal mortality rate that is four times that of Ireland. In Finland, where abortion is legal, the risk of dying within a year after an abortion is several times higher than the risk of dying after miscarriage or childbirth.

Abortion advocates routinely claim that childbirth causes six, ten, or twelve times more deaths than abortion. This is simply a lie. A study in Finland revealed that out of 100,000 women, there were 281 cases of maternal deaths – 27 were women who had given birth, 48 were women who had miscarriages or ectopic pregnancies, and 101 were women who had abortions. Women who abort are 3.5 times more likely to die within a year than are women who carry to term. The risk of death from suicide within a year of an abortion is more than seven times higher than the risk of suicide within a year of childbirth.

What About Rape?

According to the Old Testament, rape was a capital offense. If you rape a woman, you die. Rape was seen as a terrible, violent crime on par with murder. But in America, rape is treated differently and so we see greater instances.

What do you tell the woman who has been raped? Having an abortion doesn’t un-rape you. If you conceive and then have an abortion, the abuse of rape is compounded with the guilt of taking the life of the baby. The baby is still half of the mother’s genetic code. Abortion isn’t the answer. The Bible teaches that you do not punish the children for the sake of the fathers. Why would you punish the baby for the sake of the rapist? The woman still has the option of adoption, but adding the sin of abortion to the sin of rape doesn’t solve the problem. Women are not healed by aborting their children.

The truth is less then .5% of abortions are the result of rape. Some women make the claim of rape when it was consensual. There are very few victims of rape who actually conceive.
