Presidential Poll – Spring 2016

The Presidential Primary this year has been very interesting, to say the least. Please, take our poll and let us know who you support of the remaining candidates.

Most pundits predicted the primary season would have effectively ended by now with Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump the respective nominees of the Democrats and Republicans.

Donald Trump has been a very disruptive political wildcard this year. He has largely ignored the more traditional methods of campaigning, but has shrewdly garnered untold millions of dollars of free TV publicity. Trump has utilized social media more effectively, if not crassly, than any other candidate ever has. Though Trump makes repeated blunders that would have killed a normal candidate’s chances they don’t seem to stick to him.

Ted Cruz on the other hand has quietly been very effective, too. He has conducted a more traditional political campaign with a successful ground game and hustle. He has garnered precious delegates by knowing the byzantine delegate rules of the different states and then engaging in a successful strategy to win.

It will take 1,237 delegates to win the Republican Primary outright, but it seems very unlikely the Republicans will have resolved who their nominee will be before their convention. Currently, Trump leads with 755 delegates, followed by Cruz with 545, Rubio 171 and Kasich with 143.

There have been three open Republican conventions; one gave us President Lincoln, another gave us President Eisenhower. The third and latest one was in 1976 when Gerald Ford defeated Ronald Reagan, but then lost to Jimmy Carter. An open convention will be exciting!

Bernie Sanders has not let the Hillary Clinton “invincible” political machine streamroll him. Many predicted the socialist from the North East would be long gone by now. Surprisingly, he has been polling better among young people than even President Obama did! Sanders has even raised more direct contributions to his campaign over the past few months and has won many significant state primaries.

Clinton has received 9,350,572 votes to Sander’s 6,946,913, a deficit of 2,403,659 votes. Clinton has earned 1,289 delegates to Sanders 1,038, but she has a 469 to 31 advantage with insider party super delegates. To win the Democratic nominations they need 2,382. As it stands today, Clinton has 1,758 to Sander’s 1,069.
