So a Christmas tree is an abomination to God?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

So a Christmas tree is an abomination to God? This is a question asked by many different people during the Winter Holiday this year. Some people have been diving into their Bible more and more and finding that many customs of Christmas are not to be found, and when the customs are found it seems that some of these things are warned against doing them.

As the question reads above “So a Christmas tree is an abomination to God?”.  Well if we looked up the word “Christmas tree” in the Bible or other Biblical texts you would not find the word Christmas. But in this article we are just going to cover specifically the idea of the Christmas tree first. So when we look up to see how trees are used in worship in the Bible we find several occurrences.

First one you would find would be Jeremiah 10: 3-4.“1 Hear the word which the LORD speaks to you, O house of Israel. 2 Thus says the LORD: Do not learn the way of the Gentiles; do not be dismayed at the signs of heaven, for the Gentiles are dismayed at them. 3 For the customs of the peoples are futile; for one cuts a tree from the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the ax. 4 They decorate it with silver and gold; they fasten it with nails and hammers so that it will not topple. 5 They are upright, like a palm tree, and they cannot speak; they must be carried, because they cannot go by themselves. Do not be afraid of them, for they cannot do evil, nor can they do any good.”

However this particular verse is referring to an idol that is made from the trunk of the tree with the hands of the workman. You should not have idols that you bow to or worship but to get back to the question above this doesn’t refer to a “Christmas tree.”

The second scripture you would find referring to a tree used for worship would be Deuteronomy 16:21 ESV

“You shall not plant any tree as an Asherah beside the altar of the Lord your God that you shall make.”

The word Asherah refers to:

An Asherah pole is a sacred tree or pole that stood near Canaanite religious locations to honor the Ugaritic mother-goddess Asherah, consort of El.[1] The relation of the literary references to an asherah and archaeological finds of Judaean pillar-figurines has engendered a literature of debate.[2]

There is no reference in the Bible that says we should bring in a tree, decorate it, and put presents under the tree. Jesus was born in the Fall not the Winter. Does it matter when we celebrate? Well that question is left to your and your family studying the Bible and reading scripture to decide for yourself. The main concern I have is that we are bringing a tree into the house like other pagan religions do. God (YHWH) asks us to distance ourselves from any kind of worship that is the way pagan rituals are done. I think having nativity scene should be the focus in thanking YHWH for sending his son, Jesus, to die for our sins.

Finally. I’ve been saying the same, and relating it by same scriptures. All that “Christmas” is about the Yule-tide. It is covered better than I could explain it in “THE GOLDEN BOUGH”. I have seen most “holiday” practices are rooted in began ritual. I’ll stick with what has proceeded out of the “MOUTH OF G_D”, the “TORAH”.
