Bible Story of the Day

The entire Bible is a revelation about Jesus Christ. From beginning to end, Jesus can be found in the text within. Seeing Jesus in scripture is a major step into understanding who our God is, and how He impacts and affects our lives in every moment. My desire through this Bible story of the day project is to show you the reference to Jesus in the Old Testament, and how the story can impact your life. My references will be posted at the bottom along with links that can help you dive deeper into the story than what I have done here. Open your heart and mind and be willing to accept scripture for what it says. If you don’t understand a story or verse or how it applies to your life, then pray to God for clarity and understanding. I pray this helps and affects your life and you have a better understanding of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Joshua Meets Jesus

Joshua 5:13-15

13 Now it came about when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, a man was standing opposite him with his sword drawn in his hand, and Joshua went to him and said to him, “Are you for us or for our adversaries?” 14 He said, “No; rather I indeed come now as captain of the host of the Lord.” And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and bowed down, and said to him, “What has my lord to say to his servant?” 15 The captain of the Lord’s host said to Joshua, “Remove your sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy.” And Joshua did so. (NASB).

Where is Jesus and What Does This Mean to Us?

Joshua has taken lead of the nation of Israel, after the death of Moses. It was Joshua that led them into the promised land. Joshua had them across the Jordan river, and God had parted the waters much like during the exodus from Egypt. Joshua ordered all males be circumcised in honor of the covenant originally made with God and Abraham. Due to the circumcisions they were not able to travel, so they camped where they were. Joshua was then confronted by “a man” that was armed for battle with His sword drawn. Joshua did not immediately recognize this person at first as evident from his question. As soon as the man answered, Joshua realized his folly and bowed down. Joshua then asked what orders His God had for him. This is yet another image of the preincarnate of Jesus. Jesus is often called the Lord of Hosts. This means that Jesus is over God’s armies. He is the Captain of the Lord’s Hosts.

What does this mean for us? This description of Jesus as the commander of God’s armies shows us several aspects of Jesus that we do not see in our society today, and often in our churches. Jesus is the supreme authority in Heaven, because God has given Him all authority. No angel is above Jesus; that is why He is the Lord of Hosts and not an angel. This passage shows Jesus’ place in the world, above all. Jesus is not the pacifist that is okay with everything and allows everything to happen. He is a warrior. He is a fighter. We are not called to sit idly by; we are called to fight for the souls of others and ourselves. We are called to defend our faith in God. Jesus died for our sins because that was the only way to defeat death, not to succumb to death. Jesus resurrected others from death, and then in His final victory He resurrected Himself. This was a battle fought for us, because we couldn’t win it ourselves. Jesus is a warrior and calls us to be. Warriors are on the front line. Warriors have honor and a code and will die for their cause. Jesus wants us to die to ourselves and give our life over to Him.

Will you follow Jesus, the Lord of Hosts, into battle for the souls of those around you? Will you fight for your son or daughter’s eternity? Is your prodigal child worth the sacrifice? When you die for Jesus, you gain life, eternal life. Jesus won the battle over death. The fight to make everyone aware of the outcome is yet to be finished. Who are you willing to fight for?
