Bible Story of the Day
Scripture is the story of Jesus, from Genesis to Revelation. There are over 400 prophecies and representations of Jesus in the Old Testament alone. The Old Testament pointed forward to the coming Christ, and the New Testament points back to Jesus. The Bible is a record of redemption through Jesus Christ who conquered sin and death when He died on the cross and resurrected three days later. The New Testament was written almost 2000 years ago. Some of the Old Testament was written over 4000 years ago. The Bible Story of the Day not only shows Jesus throughout scripture but shows how scripture is relevant to our lives today. Seeing Jesus in scripture is a major step into understanding who our God is, and how He impacts and affects our lives in every moment. I pray that the Holy Spirit opens your mind to understanding the verses and how they affect your life and gives you a better understanding of our Lord Jesus Christ. I will post a link to the chapter that each passage is from, so that you can read further on your own.
Anointed King
1 Sam 2:7-10
“The Lord makes poor and rich;
He brings low, He also exalts.
8 “He raises the poor from the dust,
He lifts the needy from the ash heap
To make them sit with nobles,
And inherit a seat of honor;
For the pillars of the earth are the Lord’s,
And He set the world on them.
9 “He keeps the feet of His godly ones,
But the wicked ones are silenced in darkness;
For not by might shall a man prevail.
10 “Those who contend with the Lord will be shattered;
Against them He will thunder in the heavens,
The Lord will judge the ends of the earth;
And He will give strength to His king,
And will exalt the horn of His anointed.” (NASB).
Where is Jesus and What Does This Mean to Us?
Verse 10 is the point in which Jesus is identified in this passage. God’s “king” is Jesus. I added the verses before this reference to Jesus because I feel it is important in identifying who the Lord is. We have been given this false perception that God is wrathful and mean and sits waiting for us to make a mistake, so He can punish us. This is a false portrayal of our benevolent God. He is loving. He is merciful. He is kind. He is just, which at times may feel painful. If a person commits a crime and the judge rules that they should pay for that crime by going to jail or paying a fine, we do not think the judge is mean and wrathful. We consider him as just doing his job. Why is it that we do not see the same in our Heavenly Father? Verse 7,8, and 9 tell us several things that are listed under the Lord “just doing His job”. Verse 10 sums up the idea: “those who contend with the Lord will be shattered”. God blesses and cares for the ones that belong to Him, but He has no mercy for the ones that go against Him. His love is also shown in verse 10 by sending His son, Jesus, to reestablish a relationship between man and God so that we wouldn’t all be against God and would have a path to being in His kingdom once again.
What does this mean to us? God is fair. The consequences of our actions have eternal affects, whether good or bad. We have all seen people get away with crimes or sins. Our justice system is imperfect. Some would even say it was broken, but I argue that it may have always been that way. God’s justice system is not broken and is perfect. The people that get away with things today will have to face the judgement of God. They have the opportunity to repent and change before God’s court is in session. The obstacle we run into is that if we are punished by fines or jail, we suffer, but we also get a wake-up call that provides an avenue to get our lives on track with God. Those that never face prosecution run the risk of staying on that path, thinking everything will be ok. The day the Jesus returns is unknown. He states that He will return like a thief in the night; meaning no one will know and many will be caught off guard.
Our King is coming. He is not coming to punish the faithful, rather to bless them. Our King loves us and cherishes us. The pain and tribulations we experience are temporary. Even if they last an entire lifetime; it is still a short period of time compared to the eternal life with Christ. Revelation 2:10-11, “10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold, the devil is about to cast some of you into prison, so that you will be tested, and you will have tribulation for ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life. 11 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who overcomes will not be hurt by the second death.”
