Life and Times of Jesus
It’s now after Christmas and the next religious event to be celebrated by a lot of Christianity is Epiphany, which is when the wise men arrived at the stable. Actually, we know it took a lot longer for the wise men to arrive and that tradition teaches there were three, because there were three gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. In fact, traditional sources have named the wise men, but the fact is, we don’t know how many arrived nor do we know where they were from except that we know they were from the East. Scholars believed they came from either India or China and that more than likely they were some kind of religious leaders among their peoples. They could have been kings, but this is something of which we do not know. There have been a number of speculations about these men in regard to many things, but all we know is that the Bible tells us that wise men came and brought to Jesus these gifts. Why did they bring Him gifts? What would a baby Jesus do with such gifts?
Let me say something about these gifts. And let me say something about these wise men. What I am about to say here is sheer speculation and that is all it can be. So, here is what I think about the early years of Jesus’ life, of which we have no records except that we know He went to the Temple and confounded the scholars at the age of twelve. Other than this, we know nothing about the early life of Jesus until He was baptized by John the Baptist, who we know was His first cousin.
The wise men were from the East. I believe they were leaders of various Buddhist sects which was the prevalent religion of most eastern countries like China and India, which weren’t really countries, but loosely controlled territories by various leaders and kings. This would have been true of both India and China. The prominent religions in these countries was that of Buddhism. Some say they could have come from Muslim controlled counties, but I will explain why Jesus could not have been either a Muslim or a practicing Jew. The basic tenet of faith of Buddhism is that ALL life is sacred, particularly Human Life. This is a fundamental teaching of Buddhism. It would have been the ONLY religion that practiced such teaching about Human Life throughout the known world. The other major religions, including any kind of religion of either Roman or Greek origin would NOT have taught that ALL Human Life is sacred. This teaching at that time could only come from Buddhism.
Based on this understanding, I believe too that the gifts were used for Jesus to be educated by a group of Buddhist monks who kept no records of ANY kind, because doing so, would NOT have been important to any kind of Buddhist community. This would explain why we have no records of Jesus’ life except for his visit to the Temple at the age of Twelve. This community of Buddhist monks would have need to be paid for the expenses needed to raise Jesus to adulthood. This is where the three gifts come in. These gifts were worth a great deal and would have been used as a kind of tuition to pay for all that was required to raise Jesus to adulthood by this community. We know that historians have written about a community called the Essenses who were separated from the larger part of society. This group of people could have had Buddhist influences which is why they were separate. Since all other religions, including Judaism especially, demanded death for certain sins. Buddhism would have been the ONLY religion that had respect for ALL Human Life.
I am saying this is conjecture on my part, but it explains a lot about what we both know and don’t know about Jesus. ANYONE can put together an early life of Jesus, but in MY thinking, this is the ONLY explanation that fits with the milieu of that day. My point is, that Jesus believed that NOTHING was more important to God than EVERY single Human Life, regardless of sins committed. This is consistent with the teachings of Buddhism and WOULD NOT have been taught by any other religion of the day. Peace. I am Brother Ralphie writing for my Angels from The Angels of Life Institute.
