Fourteenth Station – Jesus is laid in the tomb

We adore you O Christ and we praise you

Because by your Holy Cross you have redeemed the world.

From the Gospel according to Matthew 27:59-61:
Joseph took the body, and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud, and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn in the rock; and he rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, and departed. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there, sitting opposite the sepulchre.

The smell of the new tomb, with spices and oils, is a contrast to the sweat and blood and death on the Cross.

The new tomb is an expression of the generosity of God’s love, that anticipates the springtime of the new life of resurrection. The new tomb offers up the fragrance of new life, in the midst of death. At a funeral we bless the grave, that even as it claims our mortal bodies, it anticipates the new life, hoped for, through baptism.

The new tomb reminds us as Christians that we are to be this fragrance of eternal life in our living. We have a hope that needs to drive us forwards, sharing our faith and enabling others to smell that fragrance of God’s generosity, promises and love, that is encapsulated in Jesus, and his death and resurrection.

I love you Jesus my love above all things…
