Memory

Uncertain steps

hesitantly taken,

retreating from an invasion

an unwelcome intrusion,

that creates

a fearful resignation,

human endeavour slips,

falling further

into the depths, despairing,

a consequence of enforced isolation.

In this silence,

an unexpected

precious moment forms,

a joyful rediscovery of memory

caresses the anxious brow,

memory, more than an echo,

of past events or achievement,

memory a confirmation

of being loved continually,

memory evokes

a deep longing for restoration,

recalling a different time,

one of offering a hand,

where a hug is freely given

a worthwhile comforting reflection.

From the gift of memory

shards of light

emerge from captive darkness,

banishing the feeling of desperation,

words heard reverently,

from a distance

“do this in memory of me!”

reveal the continuation

of that abiding,

consoling consecration,

not just abstract memory,

but a present reality

a reassuring word

of eternal protection!

I wrote this conscious of how, during this time of distance and isolation, the Mass offered each day via the webcam really brings us together. Distance from each other is bridged by the memory of Christ, who promises to remain forever with us. More than ever perhaps, we are to trust that Christ walks with us, and that walk continues forever!
