Since March 23rd we have been in lockdown, the churches have closed to the public, and we have moved into what at times feels like “Pencil Sketch” mode.
A pencil sketch drains the colour from the image and yet it is still a fascinating and unique perspective. The pencil draws the lines of the object, but does not fill the object with its normal colour. Lockdown certainly drains the colour from our lives.
The freedom to grasp life and fully embrace it is dissipated. We make the most of the time, but the isolation, the lack of interaction, the disruption to our routines, are what drains the colour. I thought the other morning “let’s go out for a meal this week” and within a micro second, had realised that is not possible. I looked up from the altar during Mass, and the empty pews stared back at me. They are for now devoid of the portraits of those who usually occupy them. I am a pencil sketch of myself, during this time of lockdown.
But that sketch is still fascinating and unique. Behind the lines are beating hearts, prayerful hearts, trusting and hopeful hearts. The pencil sketch is lovable too.
Eventually when lockdown ends, and the virus fades away, the colour will return to our portraits. The pews will be open for occupying, the lunches out will refresh, the tea and coffee shared will revitalise us, and bring the colour flooding back.
A prayer I have composed called
Lord Jesus, you are the divine portrait artist,
you sketch me in your image and likeness,
you provide the vibrant colours of my personality and character,
my passion, my integrity, my vision, my hope,
you sketch every wrinkle of my living.
I thank you Lord, for the colour you bestow,
and for the wrinkles you sketch with tender touches.
During this time of lockdown, I feel like a shadow,
a pencil sketch of my potential,
Lord, where the sketch drains me of the vitality of colour,
replenish me with the addition of the colour of, trust in your care,
hope in your presence, and assurance of your loving heart,
overflowing with compassion, in my direction. Amen
