From a Distance

My prayer for my parishioners in this time of isolation.

One step enough for me.

Peering into the passing distance of time I see.

Instructed isolation keeping us apart,

in the distant past you came to church on horse and cart!

For now, you don’t even need your faithful cars to start.

Just a flick of a switch, on tablet, laptop or computer

With a cup of tea close to hand, you can stay where you are!

Modern technology cuts through the distance and will get you safely there!

You were told to stay at home,

at your house you have become a domestic church,

a virtual congregation.

Our church is not just for our Holy Family parish

for Masses are watched now by more than one parish or nation!

My heart is a complex place, where love resides.

And sometimes in fear that love retreats and hides.

I look up from the altar and see empty pews.

I miss the chat, the friendly banter and your different views.

The key turns in the lock of the church door every new morning.

And our worship (in different buildings) of Christ begins, with adoring.

You secure in your familiar homes and your lovely prayer spaces.

Dressed in breakfast best, with slippers adorning feet, no need for laces.

The bell rings over the airwaves

I intone “the Lord be with you!” and in my heart, I look towards you.

As you sit in your decorated, temporary, domestic church and home pew

In word and in song,

It will not be that long

before we are once again gathering together,

with our voices raised in prayer and adoration.

On that glorious day I will happily welcome you all back

from your coronavirus distancing. and enforced hibernation.
