Birmingham: Three buses, two popes!

Deep within this body’s mortal frame

There beats a Birmingham heart,

flowing with Irish blood, racing through middle aged veins

I was given the name Patrick, I chose Joseph for a confirmation name

Birmingham, my city of birth, where I was first taught.

I used to walk from Kings Heath, or use the 50 bus, to get to town,

HMV my destination, my fledgling wages spent with happy abandon;

I loved the music that graced our city, UB40, Signing Off, local lads, who gave food for thought, in one of the first albums that I bought.

I reminisce these days

thinking back to simpler ways

I remember vividly a wonderfully sunny day near Coventry

An exciting moment of an awakening faith beginning to journey

With many thousands of people, it seemed like millions to me then, I sat in an airport field waiting with great joy for the Pope to descend from the heavens, so much chatter, so many radiant smiles…

O what transport of delight I thought….there were so many buses lining the roads for miles

I saw Pope John Paull II that day from a distance, he waved at me and I waved back, though he may have been waving at the lady behind me for she let out such a scream of delight!

The sun stayed for the whole day, the pope after Mass flew away, I am sure he did, as I stood below watching his helicopter disappear from my sight

He was going to Liverpool and a prepared afternoon tea, with cream and jam, not quite a high tea one humble and quite low

Well, that’s what the old lady behind me said, and she would know because he waved at her you know!

I reminisce these days

thinking back to simpler ways

Another Pope, Benedict XVI came to my home city too, to Cofton Park, I was somewhat older then, ordained with the responsibility towards parish sheep from the Cannock flock

An early start that day, one eye all night kept on the clock

Another bus ride to Birmingham and a destination arrived in the darkness of the early morning.

Quiet streets leading towards the park with already pre booked seating

I made my way through security to the back of the huge stage built for Mass and I vested, and waited instruction

I emerged in rainfall to take a seat for concelebration and such love filled me, a love of anticipation, for this sacred occasion

Pope Benedict was coming to beatify

a son of my home city,

the Oratorian priest, Cardinal John Henry

The big screen erected in the park spotted the popes helicopter in the morning sky

There were cheers when he landed and walked amongst the faithful congregation, gathered with such prayerful abandon, tears fell with joy

Birmingham sang its heart out that day

Praise to the holiest remained in my mind long after the Pope had flown away

I reminisce these days

thinking back to simpler ways

Birmingham my city.

Irish my blood,

Patrick my name,

a grateful son, continuing life’s precious journey.
