Ian Curtis would have been 64 today.

Who is Ian Curtis I hear some say!

Ian Curtis was the lead singer of a punk band called, Joy Division, Ian was born 15thJuly 1956 and died 18th May 1980.

I so loved that punk band Joy Division, especially in my early twenties. My early twenties were spent at the seminary in Oscott. I was accepted to train for the priesthood at 19 and I brought part of my hatchling record collection with me. I love all kinds of music, the different genres encourage me in all my changing moods, there is a time for punk, a time for classical, a time for pop, a time for rock, a time for soul, in fact a time for every music under the sun….maybe not Jazz though for me!

I loved the atmosphere of Joy Division, the chaos, the raw emotion, the melancholy, the angst, there is an energy about the music which sat alongside my religious awakenings. A world of difference from Sweet Heart of Jesus, but a soundtrack of immense personal pleasure for me. Tracks such as: She’s lost control, Eternal, Love will Tear us Apart, flooded into my conscious self and gave me great enjoyment. I can barely describe the fundamental beauty that has stayed with me into my 50’s and speaks to my mood and need for the rhythmic beat and haunting lyric.

Joy Division helped get me through the seminary experience.

In seminary we were attached to Friday Groups, students from all years and staff too, brought together to socialise, taking turns to visit the rooms of those the group was composed of.

One Friday group meeting…

(which I considered to be an artificial construct within the seminary, to get us to mix with random seminarians, who we had little in common with, background wise of any other wise too! It was a lesson in smiling at people who I would much rather (not literally) kick in the eye, as the Smiths sang so prophetically! I so detested these groups and gave them my fullest contempt!)

one of the upper house, a model student in the eyes of the staff, unlike me, spied my record collection and Joy Division caught his eye. This reddened his moral outrage. He lectured me for what seemed like hours, but I suspect was minutes, about the evils of such a band who he said were named after German troops sent to administer death camps in the war. I listened politely, and said I just liked artwork of the cover and the melody and the lyric was ok too!  Some people are quite the expert in talking about something they know nothing about with confidence, and model seminarian was one such creature. When the group had left my room, I dosed myself with a personal listening of Joy Division and my heart sighted with joy!

Ian Curtis was the lead singer, who tragically died so young, right at the peak really. My arrival at the appreciation of his music was after the event, it was retrospective, I was not part of music scenes, I just liked the music. That he would have been 64 today, brought me back to the days when I first fell in love with the band. It coincided with being at seminary, the worst experience of my life!  I am grateful that my record collection got me though the drudgery and artificial smiles of seminary and that my music collection remains a big part of my enjoyment of life, Joy Division and Ian Curtis, being part of it.

The following is a reflection about my time at seminary and how bands like Joy division accompanied me, allowing me to retain my sanity and sense of vocation too.

Love Torn Apart

My name is Patrick,

and I survived the seminary…

I shudder thinking

about those days,

the above,

could easily become

the testimony to

abandoned anxiety

or a working title

for my long

in the writing, autobiography

Love indeed, at times tears us apart…

But love,

I left that

at the seminary door in 1986

and picked it up again,

passing out through the outer gate

onto the Chester Road in 1992, heralding a new start.

Alma Mater…

no, not a nourishing Mother to me

Love, it teared me apart,

priesthood, restored that love most fully!
