James France, RIP

James France died in his sleep on 31 Aug 2020. His 1992 monograph on the Cistercians in Scandinavia was a landmark study. France’s other Cistercian research interests included the history of lay brothers in the Order, but his passion was for the iconography of St. Bernard. In several publications, he researched Cistercian art history in general and Bernardine images in particular. The Cistercians in Medieval Art appeared in 1998, and a book devoted to St. Bernard in medieval art followed in 2007.

British by birth and raised in Denmark, France attended Oxford University and later worked for his father’s international furniture company, which is known for its aesthetic designs and was the reason for the family’s move to Denmark.

His research on Cistercian monasticism was a labor of love. On his last day among us, he was working on an essay reflecting on recent developments in Cistercian art history. France’s online database of images of St. Bernard is a valuable asset for researchers and will continue to be available for future reference.
