Prayer

The church bench is polished, gleaming, as I sit, I slip a little bit, gaining composure I bow my head, and speak the language of love, the conversation and communication that is prayer.

People say to me “how do know that God is really there?”

I try to explain, that in the solitude of that moment, I catch his eyes in the silence, and I hold that stare.

They go on to say “but what of the things in the world that happened so violently, to so many, to the innocent, does God not care?”

“There are no strings attached to love” I reply, “to be fair.”

People say again “what is the point of praying, why don’t you just do good, after all words are just hot air?”

I reply, that I pray so that my heart may love, and not drift elsewhere.

I pray for my brokenness to repair. I pray to steady my trembling frame, to be led homeward, I pray for heaven, I pray to diligently prepare.

After all, in the end, prayer is gazing towards God, who holds me in love, interested forever in my eternal welfare.
