St. Alphonsus Liguori

Feast date: Aug 01

St. Alphonsus Liguori is a doctor of the Church who is widely known for his contribution to moral theology and his great kindness.

He was born in 1696 in Naples to a well-respected family, and was the oldest of 7 children. His father was Don Joseph de’ Liguori, a naval officer and Captain of the Royal Galleys, and his mother came from Spanish descent. He was very intelligent, even as a young boy. As a boy of great aptitude, he picked up many things very quickly. St. Alphonsus did not attend school; rather, he was taught by tutors at home where his father kept a watchful eye. Moreover, he practiced the harpsichord for 3 hours a day at the heed of his father and soon became a virtuoso at the age of 13. For recreation, he was an equestrian, fencer, and card player. As grew into a young man, he developed an inclination for opera. He was much more interested in listening to the music than watching the performance. St. Alphonsus would often take his spectacles off, which aided his myopic eyes, in order to merely listen. While theatre in Naples was in a relatively good state, the young saint developed an ascetic aversion to perhaps what he viewed as gaudy displays. He had strongly refused participation in a parlor play.

At the age of 16, he became a doctor of civil law on January 21, 1713, though by law, 20 was the set age. After studying for the bar, he practiced law at the age of 19 in the courts. It is said in his 8 years as a lawyer, he never lost a case. Although, he resigned from a brilliant career as a lawyer in 1723 when he lost a case because he overlooked a small, but important, piece of evidence.

His resignation, however, proved profitable for the Church. He entered the seminary and was ordained three years later in 1726. He soon became a sought-after preacher and confessor in Naples. His so sermons were simple and well organized that they appealed to all people, both learned and unlearned. However, his time as a diocesan priest was short-lived: in 1732, he went to Scala and founded the Redemptorists, a preaching order.

He was a great moral theologian and his famous book, “Moral Theology”, was published in 1748. Thirty years later, he was appointed bishop, and he retired in 1775. He died just over 10 years later in 1787, and was canonized in 1839.

St. Alphonsus Mary de Liguori, bishop, confessor and Doctor of the Church. Feast day August 2.

The saint, who as an infant was prophesized by a visiting hermit, that he’d become “a bishop” -to the great surprise of his parents- was indeed humble and most prudent during his entire life. He founded the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (Redemptorists) to preach the word of God to the poor. Eventually he lost the control of the order he had founded, due to jealousy and ambition of others, but accepted that fate with grace. It is under (papal) obedience that he accepted to become a bishop.
August 2, is also the feast day of an other less known saint: St. Pierre-Julien Eymard, confessor. This French priest of the diocese of Grenoble, as St. Alphonsus Mary of Naples, was the founding father of religious organisations: the congrégation du Saint-Sacrement and the Société des Servantes du Saint-Sacrement. Both saints, besides being both the founding fathers of new holy offspring’s of the Church also shared similarities regarding the political climate in which they lived: one during the dispute of the control of the Kingdom of Naples between Spain and Austria, while the other operated during the infernal turmoil caused by the “Communes” revolution in France. Incidentally, the Apparition of La Salette, an hour drive from the birth place of Pierre-Julien had occur 12 years after Pierre-Julien’s ordination! Thus an other “prophetic” influence! Remember that St….

Thus an other “prophetic” influence! Remember that St. Alphonsus-Mary had also been under some “prophetic” influence -”the visiting hermit”. May be this is why the authentic hierarchy included both Sts. Alphonsus-Mary and Pierre-Julien within the same day of AUGUST SECOND as their feast day.

CNA – Saint of the Day (Reporter) falsely reports the feast day as August First. We know that the Synagogue of Satan, under the yoke of antipopes has “changed the time and dates”, in order to cause confusion, and eventually the loss of faith. Why this small change, which apparently seems futile? It is a very bid deal, because August First is in reality the feast day of St. Peter’s Chains, (which has been displaced to January 16 by the apostates). St. Peter’s Chains represents the deliverance of “Petrus” from the diabolical bondage of Satan. This feast day has to be hidden by the apostates, because they truly dread the triumphant return of the authentic Vicar of Christ who currently lives into a forced exile.

        Lord, have mercy!
        Christ, have mercy!
        Lord, have mercy!

Holy Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us!
Saint Joseph, protector of the Church, pray for us!
Saint Michel the Archangel, flag-bearer to the Most Holy Trinity, pray for us!

There are also facts about St. Alphonsus Liguori which have not been mentioned in this article.
As a Doctor of the Church, besides his “Moral Theology” he is known for “The Glories of Mary” one of the most inspiring book for whoever desires to be led closer to Our Lord Jesus Christ by Mary Most Holy.
The article mentions his myopia which he used at his advantage by removing his eye glasses at the opera in order to avoid distractions from listening to the music. He also removed his eye-glasses while in the presence immodest women. Once the saint was invited in some countess’s apartment under the pretext that “she was in need of speaking to the holy man”. The saint, by Christian charity, obliged to the demand, but went with an assistant confessor; prudently he left the door to the anti-chamber open, and removed his eye-glasses.

The Doctor of the Church, also is known for his frank discourses absolutely devoid of double-talks. For example this is what he said about the Muslims (from which he once was nearly killed by pirates between Naples and Sicily).
      Position towards Islam
In his treatise upon the truths of the faith, he expresses himself very clearly upon the Muslim religion: ” About what is the mahométan religion, everybody knows that it is nothing more than a grotesque mix of Judaism and heresies, whose propagator was a vile man, impudique and thief. I say Muhamad, who, with the concourse of infamous scoundrels of his kind, seduced the people to make…

I say Muhamad, who, with the concourse of infamous scoundrels of his kind, seduced the people to make them embrace a faith more proper for beasts than for men. Muhamad trumpeted to a high note that his religion had been revealed from God, as he wrote himself in his Koran; but it suffices to read the Koran to realize that what it contains is a fabric of fables, inepties and impieties”

        {Position face à l’Islam}
