Saint Jean Gabriel Perboyre

Feast date: Sep 11

St. Jean Gabriel was born in Puech, France, on January 6th, 1802, to a pious family of eight children. Including Jean Gabriel, five of the Perboyer children became consecrated religious – three priests and two nuns. Accompanying his younger brother Louis while he was entering the seminary, Jean-Gabriel discovered his calling and entered the Congregation of the Mission, founded by St. Vincent de Paul, at the age of 16.

He was ordained at age 23 and taught theology at the seminary before being appointed rector, and later master of novices in Paris – on account of the sanctity his superiors saw in him.

His younger brother, Louis, died on his way to preach in China at the age of 24 and Jean-Gabriel asked to carry out the mission that had been entrusted to his brother. He arrived on the island of Macao on August 29, 1835 and set out for the mainland later that year.

He carried out his evangelical labors in Ho-Nan for three years before being transferred to Hou-Pé. His missions bore much fruit in the short time he spent there.

On September 11, 1839 Jean-Gabriel became one of the first victims of the persecutions against Christians, dying in a manner which had a striking resemblance to the passion of our Lord. He was betrayed for a sum of silver, stripped of his garments and dragged from tribunal to tribunal, beaten and tortured continuously until he was sentenced to death with seven criminals. He was crucified and died on a cross.

Canonized on June 2, 1996 by Pope John Paul II, St. Jean Gabriel Perboyre is the first saint of China.

Before his death St. Jean Gabriel wrote this prayer:

“O my Divine Savior,
Transform me into Yourself.
Grant that I may live but in You, by You, and for You,
So that I may truly say, with Saint Paul,
“‘I live – now not I – But Christ lives in me.’”

Jean Gabriel Perboyre represents a standard for the Christians of the modern era. Martyr in a quasi-perfect imitation of Our Lord Jesus Christ in year 1840, and then declared venerable three years later by Pope Gregory XVI -Pope Gregory was the last pope preceding the “modern era”- it may rightfully be said that Jean Gabriel, blessed on November 10, 1889 by Pape Leo XIII is a saint of our modern time since Pope Leo was the second in line of the “modern popes” -Pope Pius IX being the first (of the modern times). Is this detail of “modern” versus “pre-modern” superfluous? No! the modern era, which ended by the coup d’etat of October 26, 1958 when Pope Gregory XVII was confined towards anonymity until his own martyr in his prison 31 years later (May 2, 1989) -the modern era- was succeeded by, let’s name it… the “abomination era” of the Church under the yoke of an uninterrupted series (to this day) of six antipopes. An antipope is verily the thief who has not pass through the door, but by the window. An antipope, regardless of his popularity; regardless of the emotional adulations of vast numbers of well wishers, has nevertheless not the jurisdiction to proclame “Saint” anyone, even if the case for canonization seems evident because the “Saint’s” process (of canonization) was began by authentic vicars of Christ. That is not permitted.
Nevertheless, Blessed Jean Gabriel Perboyre may most certainly intercede for us.

As for his “second martyrdom”, which is to have his memory honored by thieves, it may be said that Jean Gabriel’s intercession is regarded in heaven. Look at the intercession power of Saint Philomena, who after centuries of being ignored by man, and after having faced the ignominy of demotion (to the calendar of saints) by a scoudrel antipope, is now making-up for the lost time in the most glorious way. Expect the same for Jean Gabriel Perboyre.

One thing may be reminded also, and it is about “time and eternity”. God may not return back in time, but He has the power to stop time, such as when He stopped the course of the sun at the prayer of a patriarch and the flow of the Jordan River, or again, when He stopped (a little known phenomena) the course of the moon, near sunset time on September 8 twenty centuries ago, at the occasion of the Birth of the Virgin future Mother of the Emanuel. God Almighty may stop the time, and He may also temporarily stop the time of the destruction by Satan during our current “abomination era”. Blessed Jean Gabriel Perboyre seems the right glorified soul to pray for, into our own moment of calamity which has started in Wuhan, China.

Please be indulgent for my clumsiness at typing. Are there real Roman Catholic faithful writers ready to take the relay?
