Year Ending
Green tufts of soggy grass slip from underfoot
in windswept journeys taken across concrete pavements.
Streetlights, blurring vision, as rain adorns December arrangements.
Alone in company.
Conversations with darker days, of dreary melancholy.
Times fragility shakes the hand of another departing year ending.
Tears are shed for those lost to life’s adventure, aching absence lamenting.
“Auld Lang Syne” croaks from lips
in choking regret, or from smiling faces.
In remembrance of past dalliances,
of those frequently visited places.
Sighing quietly, soberly,
surely this next year will be better?
Then a kiss on familiar cheeks, a glass raised,
a returning to chapter and verse of the latest resolution letter.
