Archbishop's Pallium "heals" Cistercian Nun of Unwanted Pregnancy
In a recent article, Marsha Dutton presents Aelred of Rievaulx’s Certain Wonderful Miracle in a new light. The 12th-century narrative is bizarre: A nun becomes pregnant and is “healed” by the Cistercian abbot Henry Murdac, who had also been a controversial archbishop of York. According to Aelred’s account, Henry wrapped his pallium (a baroque example of which, see left) around the pregnant nun’s eyes and before she knew it, he had carried the child away. Dutton is an Aelred researcher, and her new article in American Benedictine Review shows just how fascinating the layers of a medieval legend can be. Murdac was not known for his sanctity and also not considered to be a healer. Also, the story says he forced the nun to enter her monastery against her will, which was perhaps the beginning of all her troubles.
Nor does a pallium usually have healing powers, but Dutton shows how Murdac’s pallium was something special since his competitor for the See of York (William Fitzherbert) was refused a pallium, while Murdac was granted one personally from the Cistercian pope Eugene III. The article also goes into other medieval narratives of cleansing and healing, as well as images of sin and blindness in Cistercian preaching and, of course, in biblical texts.
