St. Peter Julian Eymard
Feast date: Aug 02
St. Peter Julian Eymard, whose feast the Church celebrates on August 2, helped many Catholics – both clergy and laypeople – to rediscover the importance of the Eucharist. He is also considered a pioneer in involving laypeople more actively in the life of the Church.
Peter Julian Eymard was born near Grenoble, France, in 1811. He had wanted to enter the priesthood as a youth, but his father forbade him because he wanted Peter Julian to take over the family business.
Finally, at the age of 18, he was permitted to join the Oblate novitiate. However, he became very ill, so ill that he was sent back home to die. However, Peter Julian made a remarkable recovery and entered the seminary once again after his father passed away. He was ordained to the diocesan priesthood in 1834, but later joined the Marists.
In 1851, he answered a call to establish a community of men dedicated to Eucharistic Adoration, called the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament. Its mission was to promote the importance and significance of the Eucharist. The congregation also worked with the poor and helped them to prepare for first Communion. The founder died in 1868 and was canonized in 1962.

Peter Julian Eymard was born in La Mure, a mining town which stands half-way on the infamous ‘Route Napoleon’ between Grenoble and Corps. Corps is the most southern little town of the Grenoble diocese. Corps stands at the foot of the mountain where lodges the hamlet of La Salette which is just a few short uphill distance. Pierre Julien Eymard was already a priest during the Apparition of La Salette in 1846. Does that indicate that sanctity may be concentrated in one single diocese during a particular period of time? Does that indicates a grace from God, in order to compensate for the evils received?
NB. The ‘Route Napoleon’ indicates the route used when the deposed Emperor of the French made an attempt at regaining his past glory when returning from his exile in the Island of Elbe during the ’100 days’ adventure which ended at the disastrous defeat of Waterloo. The adventurer took this mountain route in order to elude the opposition. It is on this infamous route, that he met the opposition troops, which in spite of stopping the scélérat, acclaimed him. This sad encounter, resulting in a relapse of bloody wars, occurred a few miles from La Mure, on the meadow of Laffrey. Napoleon Bonaparte was considered an anti-christ. He bullied the pope. He bled to death France, which once was a prosperous realm before the French Revolution. The French Revolution has excreted many evils, such as the Regime of the Terror (voted by the parliament) ‘ambitious emperor’, many minor bloody revolutions, the rising of the Prussian violence. Our Lady of La Salette, in her prophecy, spoke of the nephew, who was the “two face Napoleon III”. La Salette stood at the epicenter of the struggle between evil, with the brief passage of a mercurial tyran, and the lasting good fruits of a few natives such as Father Peter Julian Eymard, and a few others from the Grenoble Diocese, about a century and a half ago.
