St Patrick: An Easter Rising

Early morning,

swirling rain sweeps through the garden, ruffling the early arriving Easter daffodils.

Soon the March sunshine

peeks through grey clouds, easing the storming, heralding a fresh anointing of calming.

It is St Patrick’s Day,

the green grass is shimmering brightly,

anticipating this precious day’s feasting, a break from the Lenten discipline of fasting.

The shamrock

adorns the breasts of Celtic folk’s coats,

gaily green, proud to speak a word or two of their native Irish,

seeking the sustenance of an Irish breakfast, a thousand welcomes.

Patrick, a sinner,

surrounded by Christ,

his shield worn on his craggy chest,

his trusting heart beating within,

under his austere breastplate.

Christ his sure shelter, his guiding light

piercing the early morning’s returning sunlight

with a saintly radiance, anticipating the miracle of Easter truly rising.
