Athanasius, prototype of the monk bishop (and author)
The feast of the monk and bishop St. Athanasius (May 2) is an occasion to recall his significance as an author. A great series of monastic vitae began with his biography of St. Anthony. If one were to claim that the desert fathers had an originator, then it would have to be St. Anthony, but that is actually a reference to Athanasius, since it was the Bishop of Alexandria who made Anthony known to all who came after. And as a hagiographic author, Athanasius wielded an especially high amount of influence in recounting Anthony’s miracles, temptations, and saintly attributes (see picture). Bishop Evagrius translated the vita into Latin and it had a remarkable effect on the further course of ascetic writing in the West. One might even argue that the “Gallic version of Anthony,” Martin of Tours, would have been unthinkable if it had not been for Athanasius’ life of Anthony.
