God HAS blessed America–and this is why…

In recent years, notable leaders have tried to diminish or deny America’s Christian heritage. The wise, however, recognize the correlation between the faith most had in the formative years of the United States and the blessings America received.

John Adams connected the dots and declared: “The Fourth of July ought to be commemorated as a day of deliverance by solemn acts of devotion to Almighty God.”

God has blessed America and extended a double measure of mercy and grace. This article, and the embedded video below, highlight that truth.

God has been good to America, and I believe this is why…

In 1607, England sent three ships to establish a new post in the new world. Months later, passengers from the Constant, the Discovery, and the Godspeed stood on the shores of Virginia Beach, set up a huge wooden cross, and “dedicated themselves to the purposes of God.”

In 1620, a group of pilgrims from the Mayflower gathered for a time of prayer and signed what has come to be known as the Mayflower Compact. This famous charter begins with the phrase: “We have undertaken for the glory of God a voyage to plant this colony.”

Great men and women founded America on Judeo-Christian principles. The rallying cry of the revolutionary soldiers was “No king but King Jesus.”

When George Washington was sworn in as the first President of the United States, he stood in front of Congress with his hand on the Bible, not because he had to, but because he wanted to.

After taking the oath of office, Washington prayed for the nation and then led Congress to a nearby chapel to dedicate themselves “to the service of Almighty God.”

In decades that would follow, leader after leader declared that America was a Christian nation.

The minutes of the first meeting of the Continental Congress began with these words, “Oh Lord, our heavenly Father, high and mighty King of kings and Lord of lords. You reign with power supreme over all kingdoms and empires and governments; Lord, look down on us in Your mercy, we beseech Thee on these United States.”

That’s America’s heritage. The Fourth of July is a time to reaffirm that America was founded on the principles of God.

Faith and freedom go together; this is something America’s 18th and 19th-century leaders knew well. In 1853, a Senate Judiciary Committee wrote: “We are a Christian people, not because the law demands it but from choice from education. And in a land that’s universally Christian, what is to be expected but that we shall pay due regard to Christianity.”

Those government leaders understood that having faith in God was linked to receiving blessings from God.

Patrick Henry expressed it well: “It cannot be emphasized too clearly or too often that this nation was founded not by religionists but by Christians, and not on religion but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”

And when he made that statement, as a leading government official and signer of the Declaration of Independence, he was not ridiculed or cited for hate speech; he was praised and commended for his faith.

In 1776, Congress voted to spend $300,000 (almost $10.5 million today) for Bibles to be distributed throughout the 13 colonies. With war drums beating in the background, America’s leaders considered Bibles more important than bullets in securing victory.

In 1782, the United States Congress declared: “The Congress of the United States recommends and approves the Holy Bible for use in all schools.”

In America’s early days, politicians and educators emphasized the importance of having faith in God and in the integrity of Scripture. In George Washington’s farewell address, he said, “It is impossible to rightly govern the world without God and the Bible.”

In 1783, Ezra Stiles, the President of Yale University, wrote. “On…the fourth of July, does it not become us to reflect how wonderful, how gracious, how glorious has been the good hand of God upon us.”

Yale was instituted as a conservative religious school—as was Harvard. In fact, all but two of the first 108 Universities in America were Christian in nature and by charter.

The number one rule in the first Harvard Handbook for Students was, “Let every student be plainly instructed and earnestly pressed to consider the main end of his life; and it is not studies, but it is to know God and Jesus Christ which is eternal life.”

The vast majority of 18th-century Americans were people of faith, and their faith can be traced to the freedoms Americans enjoy today.

On this Fourth of July, let us, like the Psalmist, “Lift up [our] eyes to the hills…[and remember our] help comes from the LORD.” Thank God for His many mercies and pray for revival.

“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14).
