The South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) and Capetown government have locked horns.
The taxi association has Drivers and taxis it can withdraw. The Capetown government has Police at its Disposal and can at any time call the military.

Serious violence is going on in Capetown. Many people have been killed, some are taxi drivers. Some are ordinary road users. Including two taxi drivers who have been shot dead by the Police.

Two Golden Arrow buses were burned in Nyanga on Thursday. In Khayelitsha Bus driver was shot and wounded.

The taxi association has called for strike or stay at home. It’s complaining that the Capetown government is unnecessarily impounding its taxis. The Capetown government is saying those taxis do not meet road regulations or are violating road rules. The Capetown government has denied any biases.

Roads to Capetown airport have been blocked by taxi drivers and other people who sympathise with them. Students and Commuters are being forced to walk long distances going home since major roads are blocked.
Khayelitsha Mall has been Petrol bombed and looted. Several roads have been damaged. Many people have been injured.

Many hospitals in Capetown have closed. Those in Philippi, Nyanga, Crossroads, Nolungile and Gugulethu have been heavily affected. Department of Health spokesperson Mark van der Heever reported that, “Vanguard Hospital in Bonteheuwel had shut its doors on Thursday.”

Many people are now locked at home in Capetown since they can’t travel. They can’t go to work to feed their families. Some who need medical help can’t go to hospitals.

This violence and breaking down of the rule of law is deplorable. The City of Capetown must come up with a quick solution. Must also help the taxi drivers meet road requirements if they do not meet. The taxi drivers do a lot of good work and for little pay.

Loss of life in Capetown is regrettable. Violence and killings in Capetown must stop. Peace and understanding is more important.
