Victims killed by the Apartment fire in Jhb CBD

The causes of the fire are not known. Most people use Matches, Candles and Paraffin stoves. Since electricity goes away for 6 hours everyday. This electricity scarcity is causing a lot of problems.

This apartment was in bad condition, dilapidated and was occupied mostly by Zimbabwean refugees. They are poor and they have no jobs. They are trying by all means possible to improve their lives but it’s tough. Rooms were divided by blankets and plastics. The apartment was not habitable. In this building which burned other nationalities were there as well including poor South Africans.

Most of them sell vegetables and sweets in streets where they are chased away by Metro Police.
The Zimbabwean Embassy has appealed to Zimbabweans affected by this fire to call the Embassy immediately. I am sure it wants to help.

According to the Provincial government Johannesburg has 15,000 homeless people. Most of them are from Zimbabwe.
I have assisted more than 450 Zimbabweans in Johannesburg, South Africans and other nationalities as well with food parcels – help has no discrimination. Most of them were poor and homeless. Some of them had lost jobs due to COVID-19 economic shutdown.
Please always Remember the suffering, homeless, jobless and refugees in South Africa.
