THE BACKYARD FIRE
I was about 8 years old and lived in Monterey with my parents. On one particular day, my parents took off for the day and my big brother Andy was going to babysit me, but he ran off to see his girlfriend and I was left alone in the house. I went to the backyard and was playing with matches. One match that was still lit, I flicked away from me and it fell on some pine needles and before I knew it, the pine needles caught on fire. I ran to get the hose and when I turned around, the pine tree was on fire, then 3 pine trees were on fire. The fire truck came to my house and hosed down the pine trees and stopped the fire. My parents did not know what happened, until 3 days later and my dad was looking out the back sliding door and says…”Rose (my mom’s name), our pine trees must have caught on fire, how could this have happened?? (Then there was some hesitation) and dad says…..”Dale??” Dale is my middle name and they would call me by my middle name. I knew I was in trouble. About a week later, my dad took me to the County Fair and the mascot Smoky the Bear was at the fair and dad made me confess to Smoky the Bear on how I set 3 pine trees in the backyard on fire. I learned my lesson. Later in life, I became a firefighter for the California Division of Forestry which is now known as CALFire.

UNCLE MANUEL “MANNY” AYALA
My uncle Manny was a lifetime CHP (California Highway Patrol) motorcycle cop. One of the stories that he told us is that one time, he pulled over a Volkswagon van that was weaving on the road and gave the driver a ticket. The driver with a van full of hippies was headed to Los Angeles. One day Manny is watching the news and saw that they arrested a man that was leading a cult at Spahn Ranch. Manny recognized the cult leader, it was the man he gave a ticket to in the VW van, it was Charles Manson.

THE SHADOW BURGLAR
At my Monterey home, I was age 9. On one night, I was watering the front yard and the front garage door was open and the back door to the garage was open. It was dusk and as I reached the open front garage door, I noticed a shadow figure standing at the open back door. I ran to the front door and pounded on the door screaming help! My parents opened the door and I told them I saw a man at the back garage door. My dad grabbed a big stick and investigated and couldn’t find anyone. The police came and couldn’t find anyone either and to this day, thinking about this incident, I feel I actually saw my own shadow and freaked out.

THE HALLOWEEN SLAP
When I was a little boy in Fresno, CA, I went trick or treating with 2 friends and as I got to this one home, I looked at the old lady and said…”I am the devil, ha..ha..ha..ha!” She looked at me and yelled…”I am a Christian” and slapped my face! I never wore that devil costume again, plus she refused to give me any candy. Another Halloween night in Fresno, off Effy Street, 3 teenage boys ran up to me and snagged my bag of candy. I ran home crying and my dad walked me down the street and told me to identify the 3 teenage boys. I did just that and my dad went up to the boys and the boys were intimidated and gave me back my bag of candy. They were scared.
 

THE STAB IN THE LEG
