President Obama requests ‘the authority to consolidate’ federal power

There was a small bit of the State of the Union address that raised more than a few eyebrows. Without really elaborating, the President says that he wants Congress to allow additional executive powers so that he can get things done faster.
Specifically, he wants to consolidate power in the federal government — not just the executive branch.

It was a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment in the address. According to prepared remarks via The Washington Post, President Obama said the following:
The executive branch also needs to change. Too often, it’s inefficient, outdated and remote. That’s why I’ve asked this Congress to grant me the authority to consolidate the federal bureaucracy so that our Government is leaner, quicker, and more responsive to the needs of the American people.
It’s a rather vague statement — “the federal bureaucracy.” It sounded nice, and then the speech moves on to the next bit.
