Government Uses Hollywood to Release Its Version of Zero Dark Thirty
The Guardian has referred to Zero Dark Thirty has being “Hollywood’s gift to American power”.
George Washington University has described the film as, “Lifting the government’s shroud over the mission that killed Osama bin Laden.”
There is no doubt that the 2012 Hollywood dramatization of the American operation that killed the world’s most dangerous man has attracted both praise and criticism, the latter for its alleged pro-torture stance and for allegedly obtaining improper access to classified materials. But how much of the controversial movie is actually based on the truth?
With the U.S. government refusing to provide an authoritative account of the operation code-named Neptune Spear, Hollywood became the public’s “account of record”, about what has been the most important intelligence mission and military raid of recent history.
The film was written by the American journalist and film producer, Mark Boal and directed by American film director, Kathryn Bigelow. The movie had its premier in Los Angeles in December 2012 and was released on January 11, 2013.
