PLANNED ALASKA FOOD SHORTAGE...FAIRBANKS CRISIS!!!

Fairbanks, Alaska is experiencing a serious FOOD shortage due to the two barges not transporting food. Over 95%, equaling $2 billion dollars of food is imported to Alaska, so having one part of the distribution system not operating has a very significant impact on Alaskans living inland! Suggestions have been made that this problem can last for at least 2 months!!

This is Winter…a time when Alaskans cannot grow produce and are very dependent and vulnerable to external supply from the lower 48.

Commentators on [email protected] certainly had some very disturbing observations.

Sandra Magar: Butcher at West Fred Meyers told her that all stores would be suffering from food shortages for up to 2 months!

Obviously he must be receiving information from someone in authority. Apparently there is only one barge in operation,  because the second one is being retrofitted with propane engines.

Who makes a major change like that in the middle of winter???

Meanwhile:

Shiloh Greenwood inquired at Safeway and Fred Meyer and was told that :

The shortage was due to a corporate policy change  on how ordering of food was being done!

SO What is Really Going On?…broken barge, barge being retrofitted or corporate policy change???

The East coast is experiencing severe weather and grocery store shelves have been emptied.

Are we being conditioned to expect to see empty food shelves. The east coast will be resupplied quickly, but Alaska???

For years there have been recommendations for Alaska to  create food caches across the state to store food during the winter or in case of an emergency. This was recommended by Ken Meter and Megan Philips Goldenberg in a report “Building Food Security in Alaska.” for the Department of Health and Social Services and the Alaskan Food Policy Coucil back in July 2014.

So what happened??? 

Alaskans are Resourceful!!! It does help to have a balanced diet of fruit and vegetables as well.
