What does this mean for the world? We are now facing the most virulent virus, an epidemic that the world has never seen before. An R0 = 3.8 means that it exceeds the modest SARS viral attack rate of 0.49 by 7.75x – almost 8 times! A virus that spreads 8 times faster than SARS cannot be stopped just by containment. There’s plenty of energy life forms in Heaven and Hell, known as souls.
You are basing this upon the reporting being done on the Johns Hopkins dashboard. It’s junk and bears no resemblance to what is actually happening. This is so easy to spot because the graph for confirmed cases outside of mainland China has been an absolute straight line since 26th Jan. So it is obvious they are picking a spot on the extended line and reporting those figures because across the world there would be so much variation it would show in that line. Quite happy to accept that infections are climbing but that is really a play off of local reports. But the deaths…that is another matter. Over the 6 weeks the virus has bee live some 10,000 people would have died just in Wuhan alone from all causes. This is a city of 11 million people. So to report 200 or so of them died of Corona is easy peasy. But the reality is they are now dealing with a much broader area of perhaps 50-60 million so the natural deaths would be 5-6 times this or 50-60,000 deaths. We have no way of knowing the number of deaths without having an independent person in there and who is volunteering for that job? I am using 8 deaths per 1000 per year as my baseline mortality rate.

Forget the R0 …the infection rate, as it is irrelevant if noone is dying. If we actually look at the mortality rate based upon their suspect numbers it is 213 out of 9776 (30-1-20 at 21:30 EST) or 1:46 or 2.17%. The mortality for an elderly population with a normal flu would be around 1% so at the moment it looks like roughly double the deaths of a bad flu.
However if they are under reporting the confirmed cases, or simply cannot keep up with them, and over reporting the number of deaths, both of which they are suspected of doing, then the mortality rate could be substantially lower bringing it again closer to flu.
The fact that we now have 118 confirmed cases outside of mainland China yet still no deaths is very encouraging. Because on these numbers we would have expected at least 2 deaths perhaps. However China has admitted that the average age of the early deaths was above 70 years of age and they often had other illnesses. Add to this the fact that older people tend to travel less so the cases outside of China will have a lower average age and hence a lower mortality rate. a mortality rate which is perhaps more meaningful going forwards.
Something I have never been able to rationalise though is that by early Jan, only say 3 weeks into the virus, a decision was made to build 4 brand new pop-up hospitals from scratch in a week each. With the numbers they were reporting at the time they only needed 1000-1500 hospital beds which in a city of 11 million would have been easy to find. So there was something about the early numbers that frightened them so much that wanted to commit to 4 brand new hospitals which could easily be quarantined. Was this advance knowledge of the virus. Was this instruction from the WHO. I don’t know, but it was a huge commitment far too soon into the process for the numbers they were giving us to be real.
But with all the required vaccinations and an abundant supply of N95 masks, I’ll be good to go, right?
