Solving The Hacker Problem

Hacking can be a very profitable thing but at the same time, it can be very destructive to many, including the sites being hacked. This ranges from government sites, election security, to ecommerce, and even to personal sites.

While the problem is extensive, there are a number of ways to address this problem and a large part of the issue is with personal computers, pads, and cell phones. Whenever something is downloaded to one of these, it can contain additional access to unauthoirized apps such as key loggers, delayed background trojan horses, and even soteware to hijack a computer.

If a keylogger gets into your personal device, it can watch the keyboard and monitor every time that you update a password or account name. This information may be sent immediately or at someother time that you may not be watching.

Also, if your personal system does not have a good firewall set up or if it is not properly set up, then it may be possible for hackers to get into your system and subsequently modify files, access passwords, or even corrupt your computer.

When protecting your computer, you need to know who should be able to access it, how much access they should have, how strong their passwords need to be, at what times they should need to able to access, etc.  Consider a ballot machine used to tabulate vote counts. Is there any reason in this world for someone in China, Russia, Iran, or even Nigeria for that matter, to be allowed to login? Ever? Yet the people who set up these machines have not figured this out.

So, whenever it is important, it is possible to block any computer from any country from being able to access any caompter from its firewall. You may need to be able to have access from a couple of specialized sites to do this though.

On the other hand, there is an even better way of adding ptotection and this is the “DenyAll” function in which no external access is allowed. You can deny all to either ‘outgoing traffic’ or to ‘incoming traffic’. This is not for evey one though as it can block everything, including internet access.  

You can still have a deny all but also have an allow list that is comprised of a few IP addresses. Perhaps you might want to log into your computer from your brother’s house. You can add his IP address to your IP-allow list which is looked at first. The same if you wish to access your home computer from your cell phone. If your phone has an assigned IP then you can add it to the IP allow list.

Using the IPdeny = All is the best way to keep unwanted accesses out because it excludes every IP thay is not in your IPallow list.

There are some exceptions to this protection. Suppose that you IP allow your brother’s computer but his computer is not secure. If the has a hacker with access to his computer, then the hacker can use your brother’s computer to access your and if sufficient permission is available, even change your computer’s firewall.

The problem is even more severe with large corporate systems. All a hacker often needs is access to one computer to work their way through the entire system, eventually getting into such systems is Human Resources and customer data such as credit card information and bank account numbers.

A network with a number of computers can be a nightmare to protect and many systems administrator, even though schooled are poorly prepared to reduce this.

As I have over 70 URLs on the internet, I experience a lot of hacking attempts and can tell you that just a few additions to a good firewall can significantly prevent most hacking attempts.
