Yale’s Skull and Bones is surrounded by secrets, powerful members, bizarre rituals, and wild conspiracy theories. But is it really plotting world domination—or simply history’s most exclusive social network?

The Skull and Bones Society is an elite undergraduate secret society at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. Founded in 1832, it is the oldest and most prestigious senior secret society at the institution. It operates independently of the university, organized financially through its alumni corporation, the Russell Trust Association. The society is notorious for producing some of the most influential figures in American politics, finance, and media, fueling centuries of intrigue and conspiracy theories. 

The organization was established by William Huntington Russell and Alphonso Taft (the father of President William Howard Taft) after a dispute among Yale’s debating societies. Originally named the Eulogian Club, its distinct emblem is a skull and crossbones positioned above the mystery number 322. 

Historians generally believe “322″ refers to 322 BCE, the year the Greek orator Demosthenes died, marking the transition of Athens from a democracy to a plutocracy. This aligns with the society’s focus on grooming leadership elites. 

The society meets in a windowless, Greco-Egyptian style brownstone clubhouse on High Street known simply as “The Tomb”. Every April during “Tap Day,” senior members select exactly 15 juniors to join the incoming cohort. They deliberately select student campus leaders, top athletes, and individuals with influential family lineages. Inside The Tomb, rituals are heavily guarded by lifelong oaths of secrecy. Legend and leaked accounts suggest the space is decorated with macabre artifacts and skeletons. Initiates allegedly undergo intense psychological bonding exercises, such as reciting their entire personal and sexual histories to fellow members to build absolute trust. 

For the vast majority of its existence, Skull and Bones was exclusively open to white, wealthy men of Protestant backgrounds. In response to changing demographics and internal pushback against discrimination, the society admitted its first Black member in 1965 and finally integrated women into its cohort in 1992 after a fierce internal legal dispute. 

While membership rosters were published openly until the early 1980s, subsequent cohorts remain highly speculative. Known “Bonesmen” include: 

• William Howard Taft (27th U.S. President and Supreme Court Chief Justice)
• George H.W. Bush (41st U.S. President)
• George W. Bush (43rd U.S. President)
• John Kerry (Former U.S. Secretary of State and Senator)

The pinnacle of the society’s public intrigue occurred during the 2004 United States presidential election, when opposing major-party candidates George W. Bush and John Kerry were both Bonesmen. When asked about it on television, both men independently refused to comment, citing the secrecy of the club.
